Repair An Rca Plug

If you have loose wires, you can repair an RCA plug.

RCA plugs are used to connect audio-video cable to speakers, TVs, amplifiers and other forms of audio-video equipment. They are a simple devise made up of a protective cover with a central metal plug to which two wires connect. Depending on the damage, it's advisable to replace the RCA plug, rather than repair it. However, if it's simply that the wires have become detached then repair the RCA plug.

Instructions

1. Remove the cap from the top of the RCA plug to determine what needs to be done to repair it. Some caps unscrew, others need to be pried away from the main metal central unit. As the RCA plug has no moving parts, it's likely that the wires are loose or touching each other.

2. Remove any attached wires from the plug by cutting them. Move the cap farther up the audio wire so it doesn't fall off.

3. Cut the audio wire cleanly about an inch from the end. Strip a 1/2 inch of the plastic coating to reveal two wires covered in color-coded plastic. Remove a 1/4 inch of the plastic from each colored wire.

4. Cover both wires with a small amount of solder. Touch each wire in turn with the soldering iron and the solder. Let the solder melt so it coats each wire then allow to cool completely.

5. Check the fittings for the plug. You will need to remove any existing pieces of wire from the plug. Heat the central pin with the soldering iron. When the solder melts, remove the wire using small electrical pliers (do not touch with your fingers). Repeat the task for the second wire attached to the outer metal tab. Let the plug cool before proceeding

6. Touch one of the newly soldered wires against the central RCA plug pin. Put your soldering iron on the pin and wire. Wait a couple of seconds for the solder to melt onto both. Remove the soldering iron. Repeat the process for the second wire and attach it to the outer tab.

7. Slide the RCA cap down the wire until it reaches the plug. Screw on the cap. Your RCA plug is ready for use.
