Decorate your kitchen in a vintage 1950s look if you want a change from modern decorating styles. You can buy a lot of the things brand new that you need to decorate your kitchen in a retro look. But, if you like shopping at estate sales and thrift stores, you can find lots of items there, too.
Appliances
Appliances from the 1950s have a definite look about them. Think rounded edges, chrome handles and all sorts of colors, such as olive green and turquoise blue. You can likely find old appliances that were actually used in the 1950s at thrift stores and estate sales. But like anything else that is decades old, they may not work so well. Instead, check with your local home improvement store for retro-inspired appliances. That way, you can have all the functionality of modern appliances, such as ice makers and dishwashers, with a 1950s look.
Furniture
When it comes to furniture in a 1950s kitchen, chrome is your friend. Buy a simple kitchen table with chrome edges and chairs made of chrome. Accent the kitchen with chrome bar stools and a chrome lamp. Choose a tabletop in a typical 1950s kitchen color, such as red, yellow or blue. Have the chairs and stools upholstered in the same shade of fabric. Consider matching your table, chairs or bar stools to whatever color you choose for your appliances.
Checkered
Another popular kitchen style for the 1950s was black and white checks. If you don't want to include diner-style tables and chairs and retro appliances in your kitchen, get a retro feel with a checkered look. Put black and white tiles in a checkered pattern on your floor. Alternatively, paint a wall in bold black and white checks. Pair the design with red cabinets or red accents and your kitchen will have a 1950s flair.
Accessories
Top off your 1950s design with vintage or vintage-inspired accessories. Find appliances, such as a toaster, coffee maker and blender, that are made in 1950s popular colors. Add vintage aprons, dish towels and cookbooks to your kitchen and everyone will know you are going for a retro look.
