Don't feel like paying the hundreds of dollars to get a new cell phone? There are ways you can get one free. You can perhaps get one from your current provider, or through someone's special offer. Just remember, however, that when the merchandise is free, it's often buyer beware.
Instructions
Free Cell Phone Offers
1. Look for advertisements for free cell phones. Check newspapers, magazines, television ads and online.
2. Contact the provider that's offering the deal. Ask about the free cell phone offer.
3. Ask what type of phone they are offering. If it's free, it's likely an older model that's larger with less features than newer ones. Make sure this is one you're okay with.
4. Find out the stipulations of the deal. There's almost always a catch. It's usually a long-term commitment or buying with a rebate.
5. Accept the deal only if you are okay with the terms. Follow all the steps the provider tells you in order to get the free cell phone.
Replacing a Phone
6. Call your provider and ask to cancel your account. Even if you don't really mean to, say it as a bluff.
7. Speak in an upset tone. Make it seem like you're really tired of their service. This will cause them to go into a defensive mode to try and keep you.
8. Explain why you want to cancel once they ask you. Say that you're tired of your phone and never liked it. Or you can complain about the fees on your account.
9. Wait for them to offer the free phone. This will likely come immediately if you said you don't like your current one.
10. Ask about any fine print in the deal, especially if it requires any activation fees or new contract. Refuse the deal if it includes this and go back to wanting to cancel the account. They're then likely to waive it.
