Stop Action On A Digital Camera

Taking the time to learn basic techniques can add to the quality of your images.

Modern digital cameras put the capability to take decent pictures in the hands of everyone. Now what if you want something better than decent? Although today's cameras and editing software make photography accessible to the masses, a little knowledge and technique can turn decent to good, perhaps even great. Stopping action is one basic technique every amateur photographer should know. This comes into play during a variety of situations, such as sporting events, parties and something as simple as capturing your child running with the dog. The two main factors involved in stopping action are proper use of shutter speed and flash.

Instructions

Shutter Speed

1. Read your owner's manual to determine change the shutter speed for your specific camera. Shutter speed determines the amount of time light enters your camera, recording the image.

2. Adjust your shutter speed for the action you're shooting. The faster the movement of your subject, the faster your shutter speed should be.

3. Check the image in your view screen. Ensure that your image isn't blurry and you properly froze the action. With practice, you will learn the minimum shutter speeds needed to stop action for different situations.

Flash

4. Turn on your camera's flash. Cameras record images using light. Flash is an effective way to stop action because the flash shoots a bright light at your subject for a short amount of time, thus freezing that moment in time.

5. Take a picture using your flash.

6. Check the image in your view screen. Flash can be used effectively in a variety of situations, not only when it's dark. Even during a soccer game on a sunny day, a little flash can help make your image sharper. Just like with shutter speed, the more you use flash and become familiar with it, the better your images should look.
