Repair A Scratch On A Camera Lens

A superficial scratch on a camera lens may be fixable without replacing the whole lens.

Does one scratch mean you have to replace the whole camera lens? Depending on the camera and lens, replacing the lens might cost more than you paid for the camera itself. Luckily, a small surface scratch might not affect your images at all. If you notice it does ruin your pictures, though, there is a simple method you can try before resorting to buying a new lens.

Instructions

1. Clean and dry the lens using the lens solution and a microfiber cloth. Put the cleaning solution onto the cloth and not directly on the lens.

2. Dilute the 3.5 percent solution of rubbing alcohol in water. Mix 20 parts water to one part rubbing alcohol and put the mixture in a small container.

3. Dip a second microfiber cloth in the diluted rubbing alcohol. Gently rub the cloth into the scratch. Repeat until the scratch disappears.

4. Dry and buff the entire lens with a third, clean microfiber cloth.
