Importance Of Megapixels On A Digital Camera

Megapixels determine how many details a digital camera can capture.


The megapixels on a digital camera are very important in the final outcome of a photograph. The rating determines how much detail a camera can capture on every shot taken. It is also related to the image size and the image resolution. If there are enough megapixels in an image, a larger print can be made without losing image sharpness.


Unit of Measurement


A megapixel (MP) is equivalent to 1 million picture elements or pixels. It is used as a unit of measurement in photographic images. It also tells how many image sensor elements a digital camera has. For instance, a camera with a 2,400 by 1,700 sensor contains 4 megapixels (2,400 x 1,700 = 4,080,000). Imagine a photo as a collection of dots. The more dots are joined together, the better the image will look better.


Image Resolution


The main effect of megapixels is in the overall resolution of an image. If a photo is taken with a high-megapixel camera, a high-quality print enlargement can be successfully made. If there are not enough megapixels, then the resulting prints will be "fuzzy" and will contain image "noise" or speckles. A 3 megapixel camera is recommended to make 4- by 6-inch prints and 6 megapixels to come up with a clear 8- by 10-inch print. However, to produce an 11- by 14-inch enlargement, 10 megapixels is needed.


Image Size


Digital cameras with high megapixels require high-capacity image storage in the form of different memory cards. As an illustration, a 3 megapixel camera with a 256 megabyte card can contain more than 300 images, but a 10 megapixel camera with the same card can only store about 30 photos. High-resolution photos have large image sizes that also take more space than those with low resolutions when transferred to a computer hard drive.


Price Factor


Megapixel size mainly determines the price of a digital camera. The higher the megapixel rating, the more expensive is the price of a camera. In the late 1990s, during the early days of digital photography, the price of a compact 3-megapixel camera could cost around $500. As of 2010, prices have gone relatively cheaper and that same kind of camera can be bought for less than $99. A basic digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera costs around $600.


Megapixel Advancements


Digital camera manufacturers today compete toe-to-toe in launching more and more digital cameras with higher megapixels. As of 2010, SLR cameras targeted to professional consumers, commonly referred to as "prosumers," can take 24.5 megapixel photos. On the other hand, more advanced medium format cameras, used in advertising and high-end wedding photography, can take up to 60 megapixel shots.

Canon offers several printing papers that will interest other artists besides photographers. Fine Art "Premium Matte" paper has the feel of drawing paper and is compatible with dye and pigment-based ink. Fine Art "Photo Rag" is a soft white cotton paper made to facilitate printing the finest details in an image. Fine Art "Museum Etching" paper is a heavyweight, textured white paper made to create museum-quality art prints. All three art papers are available in sizes 8.5" x 11" and 13" x 19".

Use A Sb80 Flash On A Nikon D90 Camera

The Nikon camera brand is well known for compatibility, and owners of a D90 digital camera seeking to use it with an SB-80DX flash will not be disappointed. Despite the flash's vintage, it can be used in conjunction with the D90 very successfully, though some features, like the full-TTL, called iTTL on Nikon cameras, are absent due to the flash's age. However, you can use the flash in automatic or manual mode, and it makes an great secondary flash for those with multiple lights.


Instructions


1. Turn the flash: Hold the power button until the LCD screen lights up green.


2. Loosen the hotshoe mount on the flash's foot by unscrewing the thumb screw.


3. Slide the flash onto the hotshoe on the top of the D90.


4. Tighten the thumbscrew on the flash's foot, to lock the SB-80DX onto the D90.


5. Set the flash to Automatic or Manual mode using the MODE button on the flash -- with A standing for automatic and M standing for manual. Follow the instructions in the user's manual for more information about both of these modes. Through the lens metering (TTL) will be available on the flash, but it will not work with this camera and the flash will not fire.

Photograph A Silhouette With Settings

Set your camera to take stunning silhouettes.


There's something about a silhouette that draws an audience in and provides a nostalgic feel. The featureless subjects leave more to the imagination and almost allow the viewer to inject themselves into the moment. Photographing a dramatic silhouette takes patience, planning, and a good idea of how your camera works. Once you've determined a strong subject and framed it perfectly, you must ensure that the light is right and your settings are correct so that you don't miss that crucial moment that will likely make an excellent photograph.


Instructions


1. Make sure your subject is backlit, meaning the main light source is behind them. If you are outdoors, this would be the sun . If you are indoors, this would be a lamp or photography strobe or constant. Get creative and look for additional sources of backlighting. Light streaming in from a window, a flashlight, a television, or computer monitor in a darker room are all good sources and can add an interesting dimension to your photography. Also look for specific colors in your backlighting to add a specific mood to your silhouettes.


2. Use your camera to expose for the light source instead of the subject. Since the light source is behind the subject, exposing for the light source will cause your subject to go dark, effectively creating a silhouette. This will work better in the manual mode on your camera, since you have more control over your settings. Start with a baseline aperture and shutter speed and then adjust your shutter speed until your silhouette is perfect. To get a baseline aperture and shutter, switch your camera to auto mode and note the aperture and shutter speed it recommends for your particular scene. If your camera does not have spot metering, you'll have to trick your camera into thinking it is getting the correct exposure, so it doesn't try and brighten the subject, which is the silhouette. You can do this by focusing your camera on the brightest part of the scene and pushing the shutter button down halfway until you hear audio confirmation that the focus and exposure has been locked. Then, bring your subject back into frame and fully depress the shutter button to take the picture.


3. Set your camera's metering system to spot, if its available. Direct the focus point of your camera at the light source and press the shutter button halfway. Recompose and frame your picture, then fully press the shutter button to take your picture. This is similar to the process in Step 2, but it should be easier to accomplish since the camera is only metering a small part of the frame, rather than the frame as a whole. Alternatively, check your camera's auto function modes for a silhouette mode to simplify the process.


4. Think before shooting and get all the details right. Make sure your background is bright enough and that the subject for your silhouette is clear and well defined. Check your scene from different angles and viewpoints to make it more eye-catching and to draw the audience into the subject. Even though you may have a strong silhouette of a couple, consider just getting their held hands or placing them in the corner of your image, rather than dead center.

Spotting scopes are most often used by target shooters in tournaments. They set up the scope next to their rifle and aim it at the target area. Since the scope is stationary, it is better than using binoculars. Hunters will sometimes use spotting scopes as well to view larger areas when scouting an animal.


What to Look for in a Spotting Scope


The majority of spotting scopes come with adjustable tripods that allow the user to maneuver the scope as well as keep it still when shooting. Look for a tripod that can turn well and is easy to adjust. Make sure to check the area where the scope connects to the tripod because that is where the most wear and tear occurs. The user wants the scope to stand still when shooting.


Differences in Spotting Scopes


While most scopes offer varying degrees of optical power and range, the major difference in types is the eyepiece. Some eyepieces are straight out of the scope, which mimics the view from a rifle scope. The other kind is an angled eyepiece that allows the user to look down into the scope from a 45-degree angle, but still see the target. Most shooters say both work well, but it comes down to a comfort level and preference when choosing which to use.


Costs of a Spotting Scope


Be prepared to spend money. The low end is about $75 in a retail store and can go as high as $350, which is generally for a scope that comes in a titanium case and has a lot of accessories. You can find some deals online, but the best thing to remember is buy what you need. If you use a scope a lot, spend the money and get a good one.

Record An Lp To A Cd

Recording LP records to CD not only makes a record collection instantly portable, it also preserves the delicate grooves of old vinyl in a more durable digital format. Anyone with a substantial record collection probably owns a turntable, so the only other equipment needed for this project is a desktop or notebook computer installed with audio recording software, a soundcard and a CD burner. Most newer computers are bundled with CD burners and a soundcard for capturing audio from external devices. If the computer does not have recording software, packages with different features are available at electronics and computer stores. Free recording software is also available for downloading online; one type is linked the the resources section below.


Instructions


1. Connect the mini-plug on the Y adapter to the computer's soundcard jack, usually located on the back of the computer or along the left edge on laptops.


2. Attach the turntable's RCA audio plugs to the open jacks on the Y adapter.


3. Open the audio recording software on the computer by clicking the name of the software on the list of programs loaded on the computer.


4. Place an LP record on the turntable platter and lower the tonearm to the edge to begin playing the album.


5. Click the Record button on the recording software. This is the button with a red circle in the center.


6. Click the Stop button to finish recording the LP record.


7. Click the File tab in the top left-hand corner of the screen and choose Save.


8. Type the name of the LP recording in the box that will appear, then click Save as .WAV File in the box below the recording name. This stores the recording in a format suitable for burning to a disc.


9. Load a blank, recordable CD in the computer's media tray and close the tray.


10. Open the software for burning a CD. On a Mac system, this will likely be iTunes or QuickTime. On Windows computers, the Microsoft Media Player is the most commonly used software for burning CDs.


11. Click the Burn tab at the top of the screen on the right-hand side.


12. Click the File or My Music tab on the left-hand side of the screen to open the folder of digital audio files on the computer hard drive. Select the folder with the name of the LP recording to be burned to CD and hold the mouse button to grab this folder.


13. Drag the folder to the Burn List on the CD burner software.


14. Click Start Burn to begin copying the LP audio file to a CD. Wait for the disc to finalize before removing it from the computer.

Fix An Underwater Camera With Duct Tape

If you are planning a trip to an oceanic location where you will be taking numerous pictures, having an underwater camera with you is a great idea. Like any other piece of equipment you would have with you, the underwater camera may give you some difficulties if its parts begin to loosen a bit while in the water. To resolve the issue, be sure you pack a roll of duct tape and keep it handy for quick repairs.


Instructions


1. Dry the camera off completely. Air drying is best, but if you have the ability to use a hair dryer or soft towel to remove all moisture, go ahead and do that.


2. Locate the cracked or broken areas.


3. Cut strips of duct tape to the correct size. Make thin strips that will cover the damage and seal them completely.


4. Place the strips onto the damaged areas one at a time. Press firmly when applying so there is no way for water to get under the duct tape once it is re-submerged into the water. As long as the surface you are applying the tape to is dry, then water cannot get underneath it.


5. Layer the strips on top of each other, making sure to cover the edges of the tape from the previous strip.

Configure A Memory Card For The Canon Powershot A620

Format SD memory cards to configure them for the Canon PowerShot A620.


When you first install a memory card, new or used, into a PowerShot A620 digital camera, Canon recommends that you configure the card before use to take advantage of certain camera features. You can configure the card by formatting it using the built-in "Format" function in the camera. Formatting a card is a simple process that takes only a few minutes and requires no special tools. Be aware that formatting a memory card erases any data on the card, but makes the card less likely to have problems later.


Instructions


1. Pull the memory card slot cover, located on the right side of the PowerShot A620, toward the back of the camera to open it.


2. Insert an SD memory card into the memory card slot and press it in until it locks in place. Close the memory card slot cover and press it toward the front of the camera to lock it.


3. Turn on the camera and press the "Menu" button on the camera.


4. Scroll down and highlight "Format" using the directional arrow controls on the camera. Press the "Func./Set" button.


5. Scroll up to "Format Type" using the directional arrow controls and press right until "Low Level Format" appears on the display.


6. Scroll down to "OK" using the arrow controls and press the "Func./Set" button to start the format process. Allow the card to format; this process typically takes between two and three minutes. A progress bar will appear while the camera configures the SD memory card.

With a few simple tips, you'll be able to learn make a music picture disc.


Instructions


1. Import the pictures you want to work with into Windows Movie Maker. In order to do this, you'll need to click the "Start" button on your computer. After doing this, select the "All Programs" link, and then click Windows Movie Maker. For some operating systems, you may have to locate the Windows Movie Maker program via the "Accessories" area.


2. Click "Import Pictures" on the "Movie Task" pane. You'll be able to quickly select each picture you'd like to be a part of the disc. Usually, you can find these pictures in your "My Pictures" folder. If you have your pictures located in other folders on your computer system, then you'll also need to access those areas as well.


3. Click "Import Audio or Music" to have music accompany your pictures on the disc. In order to locate some tunes for the disc, access the "My Music" folder on your computer system. Select the audio file by clicking onto it. Your chosen picture and music files will be displayed on the "Contents" pane. This area will also allow you to delete unwanted files before you finalize your music picture disc.


4. Place your pictures in the "Storyboard" area of Windows Movie Maker. It can be easily found at the very bottom of the program. Just select, hold, and drag the pictures into this location. Arrange them in the order you would like the pictures to be viewed. To rearrange the pictures, click them and drag to your desired location.


5. Add multiple transitions that will make your music picture disc more appealing. Click and drag each transition to the locations of your choice. You can also include movie titles and credits by clicking the "Make Titles or Credits" link. After you have finished, then select the "Done" link.


6. Drag your music file located on the "Contents" pane to the timeline area. In order to have your music play at the right position, make sure that it was placed at the very left of the timeline. Adjust the music file so that it aligns with your very last picture.


7. Save your finished music picture disc. This can be done by accessing the "Finish Movie" area in the "Movie Tasks" pane. Once you are satisfied with the finished product, create a brand new name for the file. Usually, these files are saved into the "My Videos" folder. Choose the best quality for playback by accessing the "Movie Settings" page. Select an appropriate playback for a picture disc and burn them to a variety of available discs.

Epson Cx4800 Printer Stylus Installation

The Epson Stylus CX4800 is a multifunction inkjet printer that comes equipped with a document scanner and memory card reader. Other features include borderless print capability, a maximum print speed of up to 20 pages per minute and USB 2.0 connectivity. The CX4800 uses a four-cartridge CMYK print system, capable of producing documents at a maximum resolution of 5760 x 1440 dpi. The printer is compatible with both Windows and OS X operating systems and comes packaged with several applications, such as Epson Scan and ArcSoft PhotoImpression.


Instructions


1. Grip the front edge of the scanning unit, located at the top of the printer. Lift the scanning unit upwards. Examine the ink cartridge holder, located on the left side of the printer's interior; remove the tape securing the holder in place, if present. Lower the scanning unit back into place.


2. Examine the rear panel and locate the indentation near the bottom edge. Connect one end of the power cord to the port located on the right side of the indentation. Connect the remaining end of the power cord to a nearby wall outlet. Inspect the top panel and find the control panel, located to the left of the scanning unit. Press the power button, located at the top of the control panel.


3. Open the scanning unit again. Find the cover installed at the top of the ink cartridge holder. Grip the rear edge of the cover and lift it upwards; open the cover completely. Remove the black ink cartridge from its packaging and insert it into the far-right slot in the cartridge holder. Press down on the cartridge until it snaps into place. Install the magenta cartridge in the slot to the left, followed by the yellow and cyan cartridges.


4. Close the cover on ink cartridge holder. Press down on the rear edge of the cover until it snaps into place. Return the scanning unit back to its original location. Press the ink button, located just below the power button. Wait approximately three minutes for the printer to charge the ink; proceed when the printer's power light stops flashing.


5. Pull open the paper support, installed at the rear edge of the scanning unit. Pull out the support extension, installed at the top of the paper support. Find the feeder guard, located between the paper support and the scanning unit. Pull the feeder guard open. Find the paper guides, located at the bottom of the paper support. Slide the guides outward.


6. Fill the paper support with plain paper. Slide the guides inward until they touch the sides of the stack of paper; if the tabs attached to the tops of the guides are unable to fit over the top of the paper, remove some paper from the stack. Return the feeder guard to its original position.


7. Insert the installation disc into your computer. Launch the installer program and follow the onscreen instructions; when prompted connect one end of the USB cable to the port located on the rear of the printer, near the upper-right corner. Connect the remaining end of the cable to an unused USB port on your computer.

Make Lens Cleaner

Make Lens Cleaner


Store-bought lens cleaner for eyeglasses can be expensive. It's easy and economical to make your own cleaner. There are several inexpensive formulas, using items commonly found in your medicine cabinet or kitchen cupboard.


Instructions


1. Pour 1 ounce of standard rubbing alcohol into a 4-ounce spray bottle or other small container with a lid. Fill the rest of the bottle with water; tap water is fine. If you use a bigger bottle, use the same ratio: 1 part alcohol to 3 parts water. An 8-ounce bottle would use 2 ounces of alcohol and 6 ounces of water.


2. Add 3 or 4 drops of dish detergent to the mixture in the bottle. If you use a bigger bottle, add a few more drops.


3. Replace the cap and shake the bottle. Let it settle for a moment before using. Spray onto lenses. Rinse with water and wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth.


4. Use white vinegar in place of rubbing alcohol to make an alcohol-free formula. Use twice as much vinegar in place of alcohol. Fill the 4-ounce container half full of white vinegar and the rest with water. Add 3 to 4 drops of dish detergent and replace the lid.


5. Increase the concentration of vinegar or alcohol if your lenses are extremely dirty or if the original concentration does not work. Use 50 percent rubbing alcohol and 50 percent water or try 75 percent vinegar and 25 percent water. Also add the dish detergent to these alternate formulas.

Program A Universal Remote Control

Your coffee table is littered with remote controls. One works the television, one for the cable box, another works the stereo and yet another is for the DVD player. Get rid of the clutter and simplify your life with a universal remote.


Instructions


1. Turn on the electronic device you want to program. You can do this by using the "Power" button on the device or by using that specific remote control.


2. Find the codes for that device. Each brand and model number is assigned a specific code. These codes can be found in the literature that comes with the universal remote, or you can find these codes online.


3. Enter the code on the keypad. This tells the remote that you're programming that particular device into the remote. All functions necessary will automatically be programmed into the remote.


4. Press the "Power" button on the universal remote to test. If the test is successful, go on to the next step. If there's an error, recheck your code to make sure you have the exact brand and model number.


5. Repeat the above steps for all the devices you want to program.

The primary purpose of the Escort 8500 radar is to pick up other radar or laser signals being emitted as you travel in your vehicle. After several uses, you may begin to experience problems with your device. Following a few simple steps and performing your own basic maintenance will save you time, frustration, and money.


Mystery Beeps


If your 8500 beeps every time you pass the same locations,but you see no radar sources, a motion sensor or house alarm may be located inside the range of your device. The only ways to stop these signals from occurring is to take a different route or turn off your radar when you travel through that particular area. If you decide to stay on the same route and leave your radar on, you will eventually remember that the radar will beep when passing the location.


Desensitized Radar


If the 8500 seems like it isn't picking up lasers or other radars, make sure the 8500's antenna isn't blocked by windshield wipers. Tinted glass will also hinder the radar's sensitivity, so move your radar to a new, clear location for maximum sensitivity and effectiveness. If necessary, investigate which kind of glass your vehicle has. Instaclear, Electriclear, or solar reflective glass may block your radar and other radars' signals. Check your radar to make sure you're not in "City Mode." "City Mode" will lower your radar's sensitivity heavily.


No Police Car Alerts


If you just passed a police car and the 8500 didn't alert you, the officer may not have had a laser unit or radar activated. It's possible the officer may also have been using the VASCAR (Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder) method of speed detection. The VASCAR lowers the 8500's ability to detect it, as it isn't constantly activated.


Sagging Radar


If your 8500 is moving around too much or sagging on your windshield, full contact isn't being made from the 8500 to the windshield, so it is unstable. Fix it by holding down the 8500 "EasyMount" button and pushing the 8500 as far back into the windshield as possible. If you can confirm that the top back edge is making firm contact with the windshield, the shaking and sagging should stop.


Power Issues


If you're having problems with your 8500 not powering on, check first that the volume is on. Keep in mind that the 8500 won't turn on, if your car ignition isn't turned on. If your 8500 still isn't receiving power, check that the light socket is functional by plugging another electrical device into the socket. If necessary, remove your 8500 from your car and try it in another car.

Use A Portable Ham Radio

Most ham radio stations are operated from home; however, there are many times when operators choose to take their radios to campsites and mountaintops. These locations present unique challenges and opportunities for the intrepid ham radio operator. This article explains put your portable ham radio to use in the field.


Instructions


1. Find a suitable location to setup your portable ham radio. The location you select should be as free from sources of radio interference as possible. Also select a location that will allow you to install your antenna system. For wire antennas this may mean selecting a site with several tall trees to use as supports. For a vertical antenna system you will need enough clear space to lay out the radials below the antenna. Also, ensure that the site will be comfortable enough for you to operate from for an extended period of time. The site should provide adequate protection from the elements such as heat, wind, and rain.


2. Set up an operating position. Once you've selected a location, create an area to lay out your radio, tuner, power supply, log book, snacks and other essentials. Folding tables are often used for this purpose and are an excellent choice if your operating site is not far from your vehicle.


3. Set up power for your portable ham radio station. This may be as simple as using the internal batteries of the radio being used. However, many ham radio operators also use car batteries, solar panels and small generators to power their portable stations. Many factors may determine what you choose as a power source; however, how long you plan to operate is a large factor. Long operating periods will demand that you plan for sources of power beyond the internal batteries of your portable radio.


4. Get your antenna in the air. If you are installing a wire antenna, the use of a sling shot and fishing reel will help to get a line into the nearest tree so that you can pull your antenna system into the air easily. Do not forget to use insulators on the ends of your antennas. Also, clearly mark any guy wires or support lines that a person could trip over or walk into.


5. With the use of an antenna tuner, tune your antenna system for the band segment you are interested in working. Some portable antennas may not require this step as they are pre-cut for a particular frequency.


6. Start your on-the-air operations. You may have informed other operators about the time, location and operating frequency of your portable station and will be working those contacts. You may be participating in a contest tailored to portable operating or low power stations. Make the most of your time on the air. You've worked hard to set up your portable radio station. Do not forget to log the details of all your contacts.

What Are Thermocouples?


A thermocouple is a component used in electronic and certain mechanical circuits. It is composed of two dissimilar metals joined together at one end. A voltage develops across the metals. This voltage changes with temperature. There may be thermocouples at several locations in your home, such as in a stereo receiver (used to monitor overheating of its circuitry) or in your gas log fireplace.


Discovery


In 1821, physicist Thomas Seebeck discovered that when two wires made of different metals were connected at both ends, and heat was applied to one of the joined ends (at the "junction"), a small electric current continuously flowed through the circuit. This phenomenon bears his name, as the energy generated is called "the Seebeck voltage".


All Metal Alloys Produce The Thermocouple Effect


The effect is observed when all dissimilar metals are joined, though certain combinations exhibit more desirable characteristics for practical use. For example, in harsh environments, alloys that are more resistant to corrosion are used. Some metal combinations work in different temperature ranges. Alloy combinations that produce consistent and predictable temperature-to-voltage relationships are most desirable for measuring temperatures.


Applications


The name "thermocouple" is aptly applied to this device, as it couples two dissimilar metals together to produce a voltage that varies with temperature. Obviously then, they are used as thermal sensors in science and industrial applications. Examples include monitoring the exhaust temperature of diesel engines and gas turbines, measuring the temperature in kilns, and in measuring temperature during the making of steel. Thermocouples can be made to measure a wide range of temperatures, yet they are inexpensive.


Safety Applications


Thermocouples are used to detect the presence of a pilot flame in gas and propane log fireplaces, and in home heating gas furnaces. The flame from the unit's pilot light engulfs a thermocouple. Should the flame go out, the thermocouple will become cold, and signal the shut-off of gas, thus preventing gas from leaking into the building. In a sense, the thermocouple is converting heat energy into electrical energy, which is then used to control a solenoid that opens or closes a value to the main gas line.


Design Considerations


Thermocouples are very simple devices, yet engineers must take many factors into consideration when designing circuits that use them. If a voltmeter or other wire is connected to a thermocouple, the metal of the voltmeter's probe or other circuit wires will no doubt be a dissimilar metal, and that junction will exhibit the thermocouple effect. In order to obtain accurate temperature measurements using thermocouples, electrical engineers must take the effect of connecting wires into consideration, and design circuits that compensate for these effects.

Reset The Total Miles On A Nuvi

The Garmin Nuvi GPS unit features an odometer that records the amount of miles traveled when following the directions provided by the device. If you have entered several way points in your directions, the unit will record the total amount of miles traveled from the starting to the ending point. While this is a useful feature, it does not provide information on the amount of miles traveled between two or more way points within the overall trip. Reset the odometer if you want to record the amount of miles traveled between two points within a set of directions.


Instructions


1. Tap the "Speed" or "Arrival" buttons on the map screen to bring up the trip information screen. The "Total Miles" portion of the screen is located on the right side of the screen.


2. Press the "Reset Trip" button on the bottom of the screen to reset all of the information on your trip, including the "Total Miles" counter.


3. Return to the map screen by pressing the "Back" button on the bottom of the screen.

Use An Answering Machine With A Fax Machine

Fax machines with telephone receivers come in very handy when you want to cut down on expenses and avoid extra equipment. They are two-in-one machines that will allow you to send or receive faxes and make or receive calls. All you would need to complete a home office setup is an answering machine to record messages while you are out.


Instructions


1. Prepare the items you will need to connect your machines. You will need your answering machine, your fax machine, a telephone line cord and a wall jack. The answering machine should have a telephone line cord attached to it. If the fax machine does not have a telephone cord, you can easily purchase one from an electronics store.


2. Look for the jack labeled "Line" on your fax machine. Plug in one end of a telephone cord. Plug the other end of the telephone cord into the wall jack.


3. Locate the jack labeled "EXT" on the fax machine. Plug the telephone line cord from your answering machine into this jack.


4. Set your answering machine to pick up after four rings or fewer. This will give the fax machine enough time to take the call if it senses that it's an incoming fax. Setting the answering machine to pick up after two rings would give the fax machine even more time to accept the fax.


5. Record your outgoing message. You will need to allow five seconds of silence at the beginning of the recording which the fax machine will use to check for fax CNG signals. Make sure your message does not exceed 20 seconds. End your message with instructions for those calling to send a fax and include your fax receive code.


6. Continue with the regular setup for your answering machine and adjust other settings. Do not set the toll saver feature because this will interfere with the fax machine.


7. Know that although your answering machine is in charge of answering all the calls, your fax machine will listen in and take over if it recognizes fax CNG tones.


8. Use your manuals for further instructions and contact your manufacturer if you are having problems with the connection.

Change A Red Laser To A Green One

Many people have turned to lasers for school and personal do-it-yourself projects. Replacing the red laser diode in a laser housing with a green laser diode provides for a brighter laser beam because the human eye is more sensitive to the green light than the red. The replacement process can be quickly accomplished because most laser housings come with non-soldered, plugged-in red laser diodes that can be removed easily and replaced with a green laser diode.


Instructions


1. Put the soft cloth down on your work surface. Grasp the laser housing between your two hands and twist it until the two halves of the casing separate. Put the front half of the casing down on the soft cloth.


2. Hold the back half of the casing with the exposed laser mechanism straight up. Pull the red laser diode out of the end of the laser mechanism with the plastic tweezers. Discard the red laser diode.


3. Pick up the green laser diode with the tweezers. Insert the pins of the green laser diode into the contact holes in the end of the laser mechanism.


4. Put the front half of the casing on the back half of the casing. Screw the two halves of the casing back together.

Build An Indoor Hdtv Antenna

A digital high-definition television (HDTV) antenna has an advantage over the analog antenna it replaces in that there is no ghosting or interference patterns generated by the broadcasted signal. You can build your own indoor HDTV antenna from a few supplies purchased from a hardware store, a few tools found around the house and some parts from an electronics store or hobby shop.


Instructions


1. Place the board on the table horizontally. Measure a half inch up from the bottom left of the board. Make a mark with the pencil. Measure 2 inches across form the half inch mark. Make a mark with the pencil.. Measure 5-1/4th inches from the 2 inch mark. Make another mark with the pencil. Repeat this two more times. Make marks on the top of the board similar to those on the bottom of the board.


2. Screw a screw halfway into each of the marks on the board with the electric screwdriver. Bend each of the 14 inch long wires in half to form a "U" shape.


3. Place the "U" of a wire around the bottom most left screw on the board. Rotate the two free ends of the wire towards you. Repeat this procedure with the wires and the screws on the bottom of the board. Repeat this procedure with the screws and the wires at the top of the board, only rotating the two free ends of the wires away from you.


4. Place an end of one of the two 20 inch long wires beneath the screw at the bottom most left screw on the board. Run the wire to the next screw on the top of the board, then the next screw on the bottom of the board and then the next screw on the top of the board. Repeat this procedure with the other 20 inch long wire, only starting at the top left screw on the board.


5. Wrap an exposed end of one of the two wires attached to the coax adapter to the one of the two 20 inch long wires near the center of the board. Wrap the other exposed wire of the coax adapter to the other 20 inch long wire near the center of the board.


6. Screw down all of the screws with the electric screwdriver. Wrap a strip of electrical tape around one of the two 20 inch long wires wherever they crisscross each other.


7. Turn the board over. Place one of the two screens vertically on the board about one inch in from the left side. Nail the screen to the board with four or more nails. Place the other screen vertically on the board about one inch in from the right side and repeat the nailing process.


8. Screw an end of the coaxial cable to the threaded hole of the coax adapter. Screw the other end of the coaxial cable to the coax connection on the HDTV.

A telephoto lens is just one of many options.


Digital photography can be a little overwhelming when you graduate from the compact point and shoot camera to the more expansive DSLR realm of cameras. These cameras are more expensive than point and shoot cameras, but feature a wide range of accessories including the DSLR's most-important interchangeable feature: the lens. From macro lenses to telephotos and zooms, your lens determines your photograph. Learning to use different lenses is essential, and choosing lenses is dependent upon your photo goals.


Instructions


Working With Lenses


1. Protect your lenses. Lenses are expensive and fragile, so it's important to keep them clean and protected. Always keep the rear lens cap on when not using the lens. It's a good idea to buy a UV filter for each lens you own, even if you don't need to compensate for bright sunlight. The UV filter attaches to the lens and protects the lens surface from scratches when you don't have the lens cap on.


2. Remove or mount lenses sensibly. The method for removing lenses differs slightly from camera to camera, but the basics are universal: press the lens release button and twist the lens counter-clockwise to remove. To attach a new lens, twist it clockwise until you hear a click. Don't use a lot of force.


3. Be mindful of your surroundings. Don't change lenses when it's excessively windy, or sandy or dusty, because particles can get into the camera body or onto the rear of the lens, which will result in spots on your photos.


Types of Lenses


4. Try large lenses. Most DSLR camera bodies are sold as a kit that includes a standard lens, usually an 18-55mm lens with an aperture range of F4 to F5.6. These lenses are fine for wide-angle shots in good light or for low-light photography with a tripod, but have limited zoom capability. Consider adding a zoom lens for long-distance shots. A 70-200mm lens will be good for everyday use, and lenses up to and over 300mm are good for sports photography and long-range photos.


5. Consider aperture ranges. The F-stop setting on your lens determines how much light hits the sensor. Small F numbers mean that more light gets in, so lenses with small numbers (F1.4 or 1.8) allow a lot of light to pass through and are therefore great for low-light settings and flash-less photography. These lenses take softer photos at the smaller F-stops, and are great portrait lenses. Most manufacturers make a fixed focal length (35mm or 50mm) lens with an F1.4 or F1.8 aperture setting.


6. Think convenience. A wide-angle lens is great for landscape photography, but a telephoto lens or fixed focal length lens might mean that you'll have to move around a lot to get the minimum distance from your subject. Though expensive, some lenses are wide angle and zoom, with wide aperture ranges. Look into 18-300mm lenses for your camera body.

Set Up A Yahoo Mail Account On The Iphone

The "Mail" application on the iPhone is compatible with a variety of email programs, including AOL, Gmail and Yahoo. The iPhone comes with a free Yahoo "push" mail account that will automatically transfer all email to the iPhone after it is set up. If you already have a Yahoo email address that you would like to continue using, there are a few steps you will need to complete to set up access to the account on your iPhone.

1. Register for a Yahoo "push" mail account on the Yahoo Mobile website (see Resources below). Yahoo will ask you to provide your full name, gender, birthday and postal code and will then allow you to select a username and password as well as a security question to use to retrieve your password if you lose it.


2. Turn on your iPhone and tap on "Mail" on the home screen. Tap on the icon labeled "Y!Mail" and then type in your name, full email address and password into the required field. The iPhone is specially designed to work with Yahoo mail so this is the only set up required if you have registered for a new Yahoo account.


3. Tap on "Settings" on the home screen of the iPhone if you need to set up access to an existing Yahoo mail account. Select the "Mail" icon from the menu and tap on "Add Account" and then "Y! Mail." All you will need to do next is enter your name as you would like it to appear on emails you send, your email address and your password.


4. Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes. Select the "Info" tab and then click on "Select Sync Address Book" or "Select Sync," depending whether you are on a PC or Mac, to sync your contacts from your computer to your iPhone. Click on "Yahoo Address Book" from the menu and your Yahoo contacts will be transferred to your iPhone.


5. Transfer your existing email messages from Yahoo to your iPhone by clicking on "Sync Selected Mail Accounts" from the "Mail" settings menu. Your email messages in your inbox and other folders will not be automatically synced with your iPhone when you set up access to your Yahoo mail account. You will need to manually sync them if you wish to transfer old messages, as only new messages will be sent to the iPhone.

Make Your Own Props For Easter Portraits

Instructions


Carrot and Easter Egg Tree


1. Purchase several plastic miniature carrots and miniature plastic Easter eggs. These can generally be found at a craft store or chain department store.


2. Cut several pieces of wire into 4-inch sections.


3. Attach the end of each piece of wire to the top of a miniature carrot or a miniature plastic egg with a piece of clear tape. You can also use glue that dries clear.


4. Paint a medium-sized terracotta pot any pastel color, such as pink, blue or yellow. Place a piece of craft foam into the bottom of the pot.


5. Place a long stick with several small twigs into the medium-sized terracotta pot. Center the stick into the middle of the pot and make sure that it stays upright by shoving it into the craft foam. Fill the pot with decorative glass stones.


6. Hang the miniature carrots and eggs from the twigs on the branch by tying the other end of the wire around a twig.


4 Little Chicks in a Basket


7. Cut the bottom out of a medium-sized wicker basket. Make sure that the hole is large enough to stick your hand or a child's hand through. Place a yellow work glove onto your or a child's hand and stick it through the hole in the basket. Glue the bottom of the glove to the edges on the hole of the basket to keep it secure.


8. Shove newspaper into the glove and all of the fingers except the thumb to give it a fuller appearance. Push the thumb out of sight into the basket and glue it down.


9. Cut four small triangles out of orange felt. These should be small enough to fit onto each finger on the glove. These triangles will be the chick's beaks. Glue the beaks to the gloves.


10. Glue two small googly eyes above each triangle.


11. Fill the basket with multicolored Easter grass.

Make A High Resolution Photograph

Many professional photographers use high resolution images.


Generally, the resolution that photographs are created with will look fine when sending photos through the computer to family and friends, but when printing larger photos, a higher resolution is needed. A higher resolution is used mostly by professional and high level photographers, but even amateur photographers can learn change the resolution by using either the camera, a scanner, or computer photo editing software.


Instructions


1. Locate the manual for your digital camera. You will be able to change the camera's image quality to the highest setting. This will take up more camera memory, but this guarantees that you will be able to take the highest quality images possible.


2. Open the scanner software you are using. There will be a Resolution or Quality setting. If you are scanning a black and white image, change this setting to High or 1,200 dpi, or dots per inch. If there is a color setting, set it either to black and white or 1 bitmap. For color images, set the colors to as many as possible, and change the resolution to somewhere around 300 dpi.


3. Use a computer photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, and open your photo. In the Image dialog box, set the Resolution to 300 ppi, or pixels per inch.


4. Go to your printer, and change the settings to achieve the highest quality image. There will be an Options or Advanced Settings menu within the printer's settings. Change the print quality to either Best or 600 or 1,200 dpi, whichever your printer allows.

Modify A 5mw Green Laser Pointer

5Mw green laser pointers are usually factory-set to a very low intensity. To increase the intensity requires manipulating the electronics inside the laser pointer. The increased strength of the laser beam, while not illegal, will now span greater distances and be easier to see when used outdoors. Anyone with a basic understanding of use a soldering iron should be able to do the modification safely in less than 20 minutes.


Instructions


1. Spread some newspaper on a work surface. Open the battery compartment of the 5Mv green laser pointer and remove the batteries. Put the batteries and the battery compartment cap down on the newspaper.


2. Hold the 5Mv green laser pointer in your left hand and clamp the jaws of a needle-nosed pliers around the front of the device. Twist the casing of the 5Mw green laser pointer using the pliers until the front and back half of the casing separates. .


3. The laser mechanism is in the the back half of the device. On it is a small screw that you should turn counterclockwise slightly, using the jeweler's screwdriver. Tightening the screw ensures that there will be an adequate flow of electricity going to the laser diode.


4. Heat up the soldering iron. Apply the tip of the heated soldering iron to the circuit board above the screw on the laser mechanism. Remove the tip of the soldering iron after 8 seconds has elapsed.The circuit board limiting the flow of electricity to the laser diode is now deactivated.


Unplug the soldering iron and let it cool.


5. Apply some bonding glue to the rim of the front half of the casing of the 5Mw green laser pointer. Reattach the front half to the back half of the 5Mw green laser pointer. Hold the two halfs together until the bonding glue sets.


6. Insert the batteries into the 5Mw green laser pointer and close the battery compartment cap. Discard the newspaper.

If it didn't install correctly, unplug the device and uninstall all of the software and drivers. You can find updated versions of the software that may work better on the Pinnacle website.


3. Decide whether you want to see the game as you record from the TV screen or if you're content to play straight from your computer monitor. Keep in mind that if you choose to play straight from the monitor, there will be a slight time lag that may make playing difficult. However, if you want to play from the TV screen, you'll need additional cables.


4. Set up the Xbox 360. To play on the computer while you record, you'll need to plug the AV cables straight from the Xbox 360 into the ports on the Dazzle and the Xbox 360's power cord into an outlet. To play on the TV screen while you record, plug an AV splitter cable into your TV's AV input and plug your Xbox 360's AV cables into one side of it. On the other side, use a double-ended AV cable to connect the TV to the Dazzle. Make sure the Xbox 360's power cord is also plugged into an outlet.


5. Turn on the Xbox 360, and the TV if you've chosen to use one. Open the Pinnacle capture device software and see if your game is displaying properly. If not, check your setup to make sure everything is plugged in correctly.


6. Choose your preferred file format for recording your videos and where you want to save them by scrolling through the onscreen instructions. The Dazzle DVD Recorder should be selected as the device.


7. Click "Start Recording" to begin recording. When you're finished, click the button again to stop recording.

Nikon F5 Tutorial

The Nikon F5 is a very popular camera among serious amateur photographers.


The Nikon F5 is a 35mm film camera, the last designed by Nikon for professional use by news and sports photographers. Since production has been discontinued, the Nikon F5 has found popularity among amateur photographers due to film's picture quality. Many still consider the Nikon F5 to be one of the highest quality and most durable cameras ever made. Although the functions are the same as any camera, an understanding of the Nikon F5's specifications can enhance final picture quality.


Color Matrix Meter


Nikon's color matrix meter, introduced in 1983 as the Automatic Multi-Pattern (AMP) metering system, allows Nikon cameras to measure exposure as well as light, creating the perfect picture texture. Proper metering adjust the camera's flash and shutter speed to take the perfect picture for whatever situation you're in.


Many aren't familiar with the fact that cameras affect very little of the final quality of any picture, and what they do control is regulated by metering. Metering measures the light reflected off of a subject, which affects the color brightness of the final picture. Many cameras use basic metering, such as center-weighted or spot, which only focus on one aspect of the picture. Nikon's metering technology utilizes a matrix of different segments, allowing the camera to adjust its settings accordingly for the entire picture. Unlike other Nikon cameras, the F5 maintains metering ability even while using manual lenses. Because of the color matrix meter, the Nikon F5 can take even better photos using high quality film than less expensive cameras can.


Speed


The internal motors of the Nikon F5 are still some of the fastest on the market, and allow very competitive shutter and autofocus speed. The Nikon F5 supports a frame rate of eight frames per second, and in order to accomplish this, the camera uses a powerful motor to make precise, rapid adjustments to the autofocus. The Nikon F5 can also support AF-S lenses, or lenses that are able to focus without using any internal focusing system found in the camera. The motors also contribute to quicker shutter speeds, which can prevent the blurriness from pictures taken of moving targets. Because of the high motor speeds, it is recommended that you do not use cheap lenses, as the motor can damage them significantly.


Durability


The Nikon F5's durability is another benefit that is highly touted by amateur photographers using the camera. Because the Nikon F5 was designed for professional use, many of the parts that are made of low grade plastic on other cameras are designed with sturdy, high grade plastic or metal in the F5. The Nikon F5 is durable enough that it is one of the few cameras to be used officially by NASA for use in orbit. There are incredibly few reports of a Nikon F5 breaking when being used properly, and the camera itself can withstand a variety of situations, like falls or other accidents, that would shatter other cameras. This doesn't apply to lenses, however, which can be very brittle. The only drawback to the durability of the Nikon F5 is the total weight, which exceeds 2 1/2 pounds.


Developing 35mm Film


Many hobbyists enjoy the time they take to develop their own film, and when developed properly, the quality of the final picture is greatly enhanced. When a camera snaps a picture, it's actually letting light react with silver halide crystals found in the film. This light reaction imprints a picture negative on the film. When this film comes into contact with a special developing solution, the silver crystals harden, leaving behind a fixed picture.


For precise information on develop your 35mm film, it is recommended that you seek advice from a professional photographer or a hobbyist shop that specializes in photography. For basic black-and-white picture developing, you will need a room that can be completely blacked out, a lightproof developing tank, liquid developer, liquid fixer, clothesline, film clips and water.


When you are in your makeshift dark room, remove the film from the camera and load it onto the adjustable reels in the developing tank. Once loaded, pre-soak the film by pouring water in the top of the tank, let sit for one minute and then pour it out. Then pour your developing solution into the tank and let it sit for ten minutes, shaking the tank for a few seconds every minute to make sure the solution comes into contact with all of the film. Pour out the developer, and then pour more water in. This works as a stop bath which causes the chemical reaction of the developer to cease. Pour out the water and pour in the fixing solution, which will sit for about ten minutes. Again, agitate the tank every minute to make sure the solution touches all of the film. Pour out the fixer, then add water and agitate the tank to make sure that all of the solution has been washed off the film, and then pour out the water. Remove the film from the tank, taking it off the reel so that nothing, especially fingers, comes into contact with the film. Clip the photos to the clothes line with the film clips and let sit for four to eight hours.

Scan 35mm Slide Pictures

Digitizing your slide collection is easy with the right equipment.


In their day, 35mm slides were one of the premier media for photograph. Offering a wide dynamic range and impressive color reproduction, slides were used for archival work as well as amateur and snapshot photography. Instructions

Reduce Monitor Camera Glare

Program The Remote For A New Tv

Whenever you purchase a new television set at an electronics store, you will almost always be given a remote control along with the TV. Most of these remotes will already have been programmed to the TV that you purchased. However, if the remote does not seem to control the television set, you may need to manually program the TV remote. Programming the remote for a new TV isn't too difficult, nor is it time-consuming.


Instructions


1. Install batteries into the remote. Most remotes will take either AA or AAA batteries.


2. Plug your TV in and then turn the set on.


3. Look at your remote and search for either a "Code Search" or "Setup" button on the remote. The exact button on the remote will be dependent upon the manufacturer of the remote. This button may be labeled or might be a different color than the other buttons on the remote.


4. Press and hold the appropriate button from step 3. You should hold this button for about five seconds. If the remote has a light on it, hold the button from step 3 until the light blinks. This will mean that the remote is ready to be programmed.


5. Learn the programming code for the remote. This code will be found in the instruction manual that came with your new TV and remote.


6. Enter the code using the number buttons found on the TV remote. Once you have entered the correct code, the light on the remote will blink, indicating that the remote has been programmed. Wire An Aluminum Boat

Wiring your aluminum boat is a great way to save money and have a custom electrical system. A vital part of the boat's electrical system is DC power (direct current, commonly known as ship's battery power). Although common electrical principles apply to boat wiring installations, aluminum boats demand special attention. If the installation is not performed correctly, significant damage to the boat's hull can result. If the boat owner has any questions, he should consult a Certified Marine Electrician. Instructions


1. Plan your DC power needs. Make a list of electrical equipment and appliances you would like on your boat. Include the current draw of each item. This information can be found in one of two places: (1) the specification page of the equipment's instruction manual or (2) the equipment label.


2. Sketch the locations of the proposed equipment. Give some thought to how the weight of each item will affect the boat's trim and balance. Keep heavy equipment (i.e., batteries) toward the center of the boat. If this is not possible, use the heavy equipment to counterbalance the weight of existing items.


3. Create a route for the wiring. Wire routes include: (1) wires running from the engine to the batteries, (2) wires running from the batteries to the fuse panel and (3) wires running from the panel to each piece of equipment. The wiring harnesses must be protected from damage and should be routed in the most direct manner possible.


4. Measure the length of each wiring harness. Measurements do not need to be exact, and rounding up to the nearest foot is acceptable. Add the wiring harness locations and lengths to your overall sketch.


5. Calculate the wire sizes you need. Wire sizes for appliances and equipment are based on three criteria: (1) the current draw of the item, (2) the overall length of the wire and (3) whether the wire travels through the engine room space. To determine the wire sizes, use the ABYC Wire Size Table on the IMTRA Marine Products website. (See Resources) Note that each electrical device will have both a positive and a negative wire. Do not use the aluminum hull as a negative wire as would be done on a boat trailer.


6. Run the wiring harnesses through the boat. Install double crimp wire connectors on ends of wires using a double crimp wire crimper. Perform the installation in a neat and orderly manner, labeling the wires and bundling with wire ties. An orderly installation will make maintenance and troubleshooting easier in the future. The final step should be making the connections to the battery itself.

Garmin Marine Gps Fishfinder Instructions

GPS marine fishfinders use a graphic display screen to depict water depth and radar returns from a transducer located below the waterline at the stern of the vessel. General features of GPS marine fishfinders includes the home screen, full screen, split-zoom screen, split-frequency screen, flasher screen and numbers screen. Full Screen


Select "Full Screen" from the home screen to view the full screen display. The full screen display provides the most detailed, full-screen sonar image using both the duel-beam and dual-frequency transducers. This comprehensive display is the primary display used for seeing the "big picture" and includes depth, boat speed and water temperature information.


Split-Zoom


Select "Split-Zoom" from the home screen to view the split-zoom display. This display includes the full sonar image on half the screen and the ability to zoom into various areas of the sonar image on the other half. The split-zoom screen is great for checking out suspended objects in detail.


Split-Frequency


Select "Split-Frequency" from the main menu. The split-frequency option divides the screen in two, each half depicting sonar images from 50kHz and 200kHz discreet frequency imaging processors. Seeing the same area as two different frequency strengths is an effective way to sort through "clutter," if the normal dual-frequency image is unclear or cluttered with suspended returns.


Flasher


Select "Flasher" from the main menu to view the flasher screen. The flasher screen provides the most instantaneous sonar imaging displayed as a circular, sonar readout. The flasher screen is most useful when cross-referenced with the full screen display.


Numbers


Enter "Numbers" from the main display. The numbers screen does not depict sonar imaging. This interface provides a non-cluttered method of checking depth, water temperature and water speed. All of these values are depicted on the other displays around the sonar imaging.
