Replace Your Cable Tv With Netflix And Hulu And Save Money

You have 200 channels, and there's never anything on. 200 channels, and you only watch 5 of them regularly. Why are you still paying for cable? I recently decided to cut my cable entirely and get my favorite shows and movies online, and have cut my cable bill by over HALF! And you can too.

Instructions

1. First and foremost, you must get high speed internet access, if you don't have it already. Check in your area for local providers. In most cases, your cable or satellite provider also provides high-speed internet services. The thing to watch out for is if the service providers have any monthly bandwidth restrictions, and if so, what the cap is. Ideally you want a provider that does not have such restrictions, especially if you're going to be streaming a lot of video online.

2. Once you have your internet connection, and a cable modem (either provided by your ISP or purchased yourself; I recommend buying your own to avoid the extra rental fee from your provider), just get on the internet! Many of the major network channels stream full episodes of their popular shows.

If you don't want to bookmark a dozen different channels, you can find most of your favorite programs at Hulu.com. Hulu will either stream the shows directly or else link you to the web site where they can be viewed, all for free. Now you can watch at your convenience without paying for a DVR. Hulu also often has entire movies available, as well as entire TV series. Not just current shows either, but programming going back decades. This is the minimum you need to do to replace your cable subscription, but continue on for more options.

3. Subscribe to Netflix. If you enjoy movies, you can replace your cable movies with a subscription to Netflix, or other DVD by mail services. But the main draw for Netflix in this plan is the unlimited instant online viewing service you get with any of Netflix's unlimited plans, as little as $8.95 a month. There are thousands of movies and TV shows available to watch online with Netflix, from classic Golden Age of Hollywood titles to some very current titles, with more being added all the time. The only downside of this is that some movies are only available online for a limited time due to licensing, but you always have plenty of warning. And quite often the movies are still available after the original date they were to be taken down lapses.

4. Watch online programming on your TV. If you're not keen about watching shows on your computer all the time, especially after shelling out money for your 52-inch HD TV, there are more options available. If you have a laptop or spare computer, you can install Boxee on them and hook it up to your TV. Boxee is a media center application specifically designed to play media from a variety of differnt sources, including online, directly on your tv. One problem with Boxee is that it is currently blocked by Hulu.

5. If you have an PS3, XBox360, or HP MediaSmart TV, you can stream online content to your TV buy purchasing the media center program PlayOn from www.themediamall.com. The program costs $39.99. It works by streaming content from your PC through your home network to your network-connected game console. A few limitations I've noticed with this program is that you can't skip ahead when watching a Netflix movie. Also the content you can watch on Hulu with PlayOn seems to be limited to the shows that are hosted directly by Hulu. So you can watch the Daily Show, but to see the latest episode of South Park (which is hosted by SouthParkStudios.com) you have to watch from your computer.

6. There are several options to watch Netflix online movies directly on your TV. If you have an XBox360, TiVo, or certain models of network-enabled BD players (go to Netflix.com for more specifics) you already have this ability. Another option (and the one I use) is the Roku digital video player ($99.99). This device can use a wired or wireless connection to your home network to stream movies from Netflix (and Amazon Video on Demand) to your TV. It's a good option if you don't want to spend a few hundred dollars on an XBox360 or BD player. One downside is that you have to log on to Netflix from a computer to add movies to your online queue before you can watch them with the Roku.

7. Watching from your TV in most cases requires not just having a computer hooked to the internet, but another device as well. This means you will also need to set up a home network. A decent wireless router can be purchased for around $50. For help in setting up the network, you can find instructions in the router documentation, or online, very likely here on eHow.com.

8. It may seem like you're only spending more money by buying a router or a Roku player or special software, but you will save more money in the long run. I used to pay $140 for HD Cable and 8Mbps internet from my cable provider. After switching over to watching Netflix and Hulu with an internet-only plan, my bill is now about $55. Over a year this will save me over $1000, more than paying for the equipment. You may actually find yourself getting more things done, now that you don't spend hours flipping channels aimlessly looking for something to watch.

Make A Relay Call For Free

Relay calls are phone call services available to those who cannot hear. They are traditionally free to those have difficulty hearing. These are services provided by telephone companies in order to best serve the hearing impaired. A user sits at his computer and types what he wants to say to the party he's talking to, the interpreter reads what he typed to the person on the other end of the phone, then types the response back to the hearing-impaired person.

Instructions

1. Go to a free relay-call website like RelayCall.com sponsored by AT&T. Type the number of the person you are calling in the phone number space in the upper right-hand corner of your screen.

2. Click on the "Special Instructions" box if you have special instructions for the operator about your condition or just general information the person should know before you start talking. Once you press the "Special Instructions" button, a new window appears that allows you to type in the information you want the operator to know.

3. Click the "Connect" button when you are ready to dial the call for free. Your call is then connected to the person you are dialing. If you need to dial 911, click the 911 button and you will be connected instantly to emergency help.

4. Type in what you want to tell the person you are dialing. When the party you are calling answers, the operator will type in what the other party says. You can read what the other person says on the gray screen of the website. When you click the "Send" button, the operator then reads what you typed to the other party. The party responds, and the operator types the response back to you.

5. Hang up the free relay call by clicking the "Hang Up" button. You are now disconnected and have completed a free relay call.

Make A Homemade Portrait Studio

The most important aspect of a homemade portrait studio is the ability to satisfy your clients. There is no specific number of backdrops or props needed, but remember that you will attract more business and create more satisfied clients if they have more say in how their portraits will look.

Instructions

1. Find or create a space large enough to comfortably contain several people, plus room to move around lighting and camera equipment.

2. Hang backdrops on a wall or use backdrop stands to support them. A studio wall can also be painted to use as a backdrop.

3. Position lights to adequately illuminate the area in front of the backdrops. Use a main light to illuminate the subject. A fill light is usually positioned opposite the main light to reduce or remove heavy shadows. A back light, which illuminates the area between the subject and the backdrop, provides depth and controls shadow behind the subject.

4. Set a tripod up in your studio to support any camera you might want to use. Lighting techniques for portraits sometimes require that your camera is stable, in order to prevent blurring in situations where low light or slow shutter speed may be needed.

5. Make several props available for clients to use in their portraits. Props vary, depending on the age of the subject and reason for the portrait, but normally include chairs and objects for support, as well as theme-based props, such as sports equipment and seasonal or holiday-related objects.

6. Keep an assortment of toys for younger children. Diversions will keep them calm, as well as prevent stress for both the photographer and the family. Stuffed animals work as comfort objects and puppets can be used by a photographer to attract an infant's attention at the time the photo is taken.

Replace The Light Bulb In A Panasonic Projection Tv

Panasonic projection TVs have a reputation for reliable service and high-end options which rank them among the elite in home electronics. Most of their projection TVs use a lamp to power the screen, which will eventually burn out the same way any other light bulb can. Panasonic sells replacement bulbs and you can also buy them online through outlets such as Amazon.com. Replacing them is a fairly easy process which you can perform yourself, without having to call a repairman.

Instructions

1. Shut off the power to the Panasonic projection TV and wait 1 to 3 minutes until you hear the cooling fan stop. Then unplug the TV. Don't unplug the TV before you hear the fan stop or else it might damage the set.

2. Wait until the lamp has a chance to cool down. It may be quite hot after it has been used. Panasonic recommends leaving the TV off and unplugged for at least an hour before swapping out the lamp.

3. Open the cover on the front of the TV and turn the lamp cover knob to the "open" position (usually by turning it to the left). Then pull the lamp cover itself out and down to access the lamp itself.

4. Turn the lamp unit knob (not to be confused with the lamp cover knob) to the "open" position (usually by turning it to the left). Pull the old lamp free of the TV by grasping the lamp unit knob and carefully pulling on it.

5. Slide the new lamp into place, making sure that it's facing the same direction and in the same position as the old lamp.

6. Turn the lamp unit knob to the "lock" position, usually by turning it to the right. You should here a clicking noise to tell you that it's locked.

7. Shut the lamp cover and turn the lamp cover knob to the "lock" position, usually by turning it to the right, Then close the front cover on the Panasonic projection TV.

8. Reset the lamp time (the specifics depend on the precise type of lamp you have purchased), then turn the TV on. If the screen doesn't come on, you may not have secured the lamp properly. Double check the cover knob and lamp knob to make sure they are both locked.

Replace The Fuse In An Amplifier

The morning after a great party in which you pumped up the jams all night is always sobering when you realize that you blew the fuse in your amplifier. If you don't know replace it with a new one, your sound system will be dead in the water. Here's how you can get your rig back up and rocking by replacing the blown fuse. Just don't tell your neighbors I was the one who told you do it!

Instructions

1. Unplug the amplifier from the wall outlet before attempting to replace the fuse.

2. Turn your amplifier around and look at the back side of the unit. Some models make it very easy to replace the fuse. Look for a circular component that has a + on it.

3. If your amplifier has this, just twist the circular component counterclockwise and it will pop out. Pull it out and the fuse will be sitting right inside.

4. Simply replace the fuse with a like one and twist the circular component back in place.

5. If you don't see the external fuse port on your amplifier, then you will need to remove the unit's cover. Remove the screws along the sides and the back of the unit, which are securing the top cover in place. Once they are all removed, the cover should come off easily by lifting the backside up and pulling it out.

6. Look in the vicinity where the electrical cord enters the amplifier and you should see the glass tube fuse. Carefully pry it out of its clamps.

7. You should be able to tell by looking at the fuse whether or not it's blown. If you cannot, use a digital multimeter to test for continuity (see Resources below).

8. Replace a like fuse in the fuse clamp. replace the cover and drive all of the screws back into place.

9. Plug your amplifier back in and turn it on. You should be back up and running and ready for your next party!

Replace The End Of A Coaxial Cable

Are you tired of waiting for the cable or satellite guy to some over and either install your coax cable or replace the end fittings? Most of the cable or satellite installers are independent contractors. They want to get the job done as quick as possible if you're not paying them for extra work. Replacing the end of a coax cable is very easy if you have the right tools.

Instructions

1. Go the the local hardware store and buy a pair of coax cable strippers, coax crimper and the silver end fitting, also called an "F" connector, that will plug into your cable or satellite receiver.

2. Cut the old end fitting off with wire cutters. You can take a look at the layers inside the cable so you know what you are dealing with.

3. Use your coax strippers and strip the outer cable sheath down to the white sheath that is covering the copper wire. The stripper will actually make two cuts: One blade will cut the pvc outer sheath, and one will cut that white sheath covering the copper wire.

4. Grab your new end fitting and place it over the stripped-down coax cable. Make sure that it will fit snug into the end fitting and the copper wire is not sticking out past the end fitting. If the copper wire is sticking out too far, just trim it down to size with a quick snip from your wire cutters.

5. Use your cable crimpers and crimp the bottom end of the end fitting. You are done!

Select A Digital Camera That Is Right For You

Choose a camera with features to enhance your subjects.

Camera features garnering a perfect rating from your neighbor might not resemble the bells and whistles you've always dreamed about. When shopping for a digital camera, keep your reasons for using the camera in mind. If your main subject includes kids playing sports, choose a camera with extensive zoom capabilities. If you take detailed shots of tiny objects, such as stamps, pick a camera with macro functions. Before heading to the store, make a list of preferred camera capabilities. This will help sales staff guide you to a camera that best suits your personal needs.

Instructions

1. Choose a camera with optical zoom exceeding a 3x rating. Or, pick a camera with the option to use interchangeable lenses if you take pictures of subjects at a distance. Reduce useless background by using zoom or a telephoto lens attachment when traveling, photographing sports or to capture close-up pictures.

2. Select a camera with a water-resistant surface if you go boating, fishing, swimming or partake in other water activities. Some cameras come with an optional underwater-housing accessory, perfect for photographers who dive, snorkel or surf.

3. Pick a camera with a megapixel rating high enough to facilitate your photo output needs. Scrapbooking, cropping and enlarging photos works best when using a camera with a high resolution. Choose a 5MP camera or larger when routinely cropping more than half of your image for scrapbooking or making prints larger than 8 inches by 10 inches.

4. Get a camera with creative features if you love to express your artistic side. Choose a camera with spot-color options, black and white settings or the option to print a photo in sepia brown-tone. More creative features include panoramic stitching and the ability to isolate still photos from video clips captured by the digital camera.

5. Choose a camera with modes that mirror your favorite subjects. Kids and pets mode offers a fast shutter speed to capture fast-paced children and critters. Winter scene mode makes it easy to properly expose snowy white scenes during sunny weather.

6. Pick a camera that fits you physically. Choose a camera with a padded eyecup if you wear glasses or large buttons if you have wide fingers. Some cameras have side grips to make them bulkier and easy to hold. Or, choose a slender camera that fits in a shirt pocket.

Why Does Redeye Occur In Photos

Take a couple steps back from your subject to alleviate red eye

Red eye, also known as "devil eyes," occurs in photos because of poor camera design, low light conditions, subjects staring at the camera and improper camera positioning. Red eye is more pronounced in children and people with either light eye color or blond or light-red hair.

Poor camera design

Many point and shoot cameras have a fixed flash. This can cause red eye if you are distant from your subject. Raising the flash away from the lens prevents or corrects red eye. Unfortunately this can't be done with point and shoot cameras.

Low light conditions

An eye's iris opens wider in low light conditions. Red eye occurs when the flash bounces off the retina's blood vessels. To alleviate this, turn on more lights in the area.

Staring

Red eye also occurs when your subject stares at the flash. Either ask your subject not to look at the camera or stand near a light source. The light will force the iris to contract.

Improper positioning

Taking photos directly in front of your subject increases the possibility for red eye. Try standing at an angle and between 3 to 5 feet from your subject.

Who Buys Used Spotting Scopes

Spotting scopes are used by outdoor enthusiasts, including hunters, hikers and bird watchers, as a tool to magnify distant objects. There are several different models and styles available. Used spotting scopes are available to bring these models into a reasonable price range.

Types

Several different companies produce spotting scopes, and the price can vary from $100 to $3,000, based on specific features and quality of construction. Used spotting scopes cost much less and can be found through on-line through Cabela's, eBay, craigslist, Amazon.com or local sporting goods stores.

Features

When reviewing the features of a used spotting scope, consider eye relief, magnification, objective size, weight, size and the overall quality of the glass.

Identification

Analyze major areas such as the body, eyepiece and objective lens to look for wear and tear. If you notice something that looks as if it may have been mistreated, do not consider that specific spotting scope.

Considerations

Determine how you plan on using the spotting scope to decide how much to spend. If you are going to use the scope once or twice a year, then a model about $100 will be sufficient, but if you are using the scope for professional services, you need to review the models about $1,000.

Benefits

Buying a used spotting scope can provide a great value. Many manufacturers are also offering refurbished optics at a used price that gives the buyer an added advantage.

Warning

Be aware of remaining warranty and obtain info from the previous owner if available to find out how the scope was used. A spotting scope will be in worse condition from someone who used it every day in rugged country.

Replace Nickel Cadmium Batteries With Lithium Ion

If you repalce NiCd batteries with lithium-ion battieries, you don't need as many.

It doesn't matter what type of chemical composition your batteries contain, the result is the production of energy to power your device. What does matter is how much energy a battery produces in terms of voltage. Simply replacing three nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries with three lithium-ion batteries will damage electrical equipment. An individual NiCd battery produces 1.2 volts while an individual lithium-ion battery produces 3.6 volts. For example, if your equipment operates on three NiCd batteries it needs 3.6 volts, the equivalent of only one lithium-ion battery.

Instructions

1. Check out the voltage requirement of the equipment your NiCd batteries power. Divide the voltage by 1.2 to find out how many NiCd batteries power your device.

2. Purchase one lithium-ion battery for every three NiCd batteries your device needs from an electrical or hobby store. If it takes six NiCd batteries, get two lithium-ion batteries and so on. Note that the numbers are not always divisible, so round them up or down to the nearest divisible number. A couple of extra or fewer volts won't particularly affect the device. For example, if your device operates on four NiCd batteries get one lithium-ion, but if it operates on five NiCd's get two lithium-ion batteries.

3. Purchase a lithium-ion battery container from an electrical or hobby store. Obtain a lithium-ion battery charger at the same time. Lithium-ion containers and chargers are not the same as the NiCd pack or charger, just as the batteries are different. Ensure the wired plug or jack on the end of the battery container is the same as that of the NiCd one, so take your old one to the store to compare. If not, purchase a new one.

4. Put the lithium-ion batteries into the battery pack container. Put the plug or jack into your device.

Take Good Wildlife Pictures

Wildlife photographers should prepare for all weather conditions.

Wildlife photographers capture seldom seen moments in nature. Taking good wildlife photos involves a great deal of patience as it may take hours or even days for the right moment to happen. Putting yourself into position comes with a fair share of hazards. Safety can be a concern for wildlife photographers, especially when shooting in areas with large or potentially dangerous animals.

Instructions

1. Get the gear ready. Test all the equipment before embarking on a photography expedition into nature. Once out in the wilderness, troubleshooting gear can be difficult. Pack plenty of supplies, snacks, water and layers of clothing. Depending how deep into nature the photographer is going, additional camping supplies may be necessary. Wildlife photographers must have a telephoto lens to keep a safe distance from their subjects. Those going into more dangerous areas (such as the African Savannah) may want to bring a gun for protection.

2. Talk to local guides and wildlife experts. People who know the wilderness will know where certain species of animals congregate and where to get the best pictures. Plan the location with a guide as they may have valuable information about the area.

3. Tell others where you are going and for how long you will be going. In case something happens others should know where to look for you. Bring a cell phone and GPS unit.

4. Select a location that has a good vantage point of the area where animals are likely to be. The area should have clear views. Ready the camera so that if the right shot happens you can capture it. This step is so important as it may take days for a similar shot to occur.

5. Prepare a blind. A blind is a small hut that is used by hunters and wildlife photographers to blend into their environment. The blind conceals the photographer so that animals can come closer and feel safe.

6. Make use of natural light. Start the day very early; you should be in the wilderness just as the sun is coming up and leave just before it gets dark. This will maximize the amount of daylight the photographer can use.

7. Use scents and bait to attract animals. If the photographer is looking for specific animals then they should use bait (food that animal enjoys) and scents to attract the animal. Be careful as the scent of one animal may attract its predators.

8. Use different lens. A good wildlife photographer will have several different types of lenses; specifically telephoto lenses. This allows the photographer to capture shots at varying distances with great accuracy.

9. Learn about the animals. Knowing more about the subjects being photographed will not only help the photographer locate the animals but also where and when to look for them. This information can help the photographer try to stage certain shots. For example, going to a stream where salmon spawn in the spring is a great place to photograph bears hunting.

Use A Nextel Phone On Boost Mobile

A Nextel phone can function with a Boost Mobile SIM card

Using a Nextel phone on Boost Mobile lets you take advantage of an old Nextel device by putting it to use on the Boost Mobile Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN). The Boost mobile iDEN network is the same as the Nextel national iDEN network, so phones originally branded for Nextel can also be used on the Boost network. Boost Mobile offers prepaid cellular plans that charge by the minute in addition to prepaid unlimited plans that include push-to-talk walkie talkie services that operate interchangeably with those on Nextel.

Instructions

1. Turn the Nextel phone off by pressing and holding the power or "End" button until the screen goes dark.

2. Remove the back battery cover of the Nextel phone you want to activate or use on Boost Mobile.

3. Remove the battery from the Nextel phone.

4. Take note of the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) underneath the battery of the phone. Write it down, as the IMEI is necessary when activating your Boost Mobile phone.

5. Remove the old Nextel SIM card if it is currently in the phone. Push downward on the SIM card to push it out of the slot on the phone.

6. Insert the new Boost Mobile SIM card. The SIM card should be inserted with the metal contacts on the bottom of the card facing down. You can get an unactivated Boost Mobile SIM card by purchasing the Boost starter kit. Prices vary between retailers, but the start kit includes a $10 credit that can be applied toward prepaid minutes or a prepaid unlimited plan.

7. Reinsert the battery if you removed it in Step 2.

8. Snap the back cover in place to protect the back of the phone.

9. Press the Power or "End" button and hold it until the Nextel phone powers on.

10. Activate your SIM card on the Boost Mobile website. Type the SIM card ID, found on the SIM card packaging, and the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number located underneath the battery on the phone. This information must be typed on the Boost Mobile "Activate" page. After entering the information, click "Start Activation Process."

11. Provide personal details, if you wish. As Boost Mobile is a prepaid service, you need not associate a credit card with your account, nor must you provide personal subscriber information. Select a phone number that will be used by your Nextel phone on the Boost network and click "Next."

12. Try to make an outgoing call on your Nextel phone with a Boost SIM card after activating the SIM. Remember, Boost starter kit SIM cards receive a complimentary $10 credit that can be used to make phone calls and use other Boost Mobile services. If the call goes through, the phone is properly activated.

Tefc Vs Odp Nema

NEMA stands for National Electric Manufacturer's Association. This trade association sets standards and produces publications for electrical equipment in the United States, including motors. Motors have two types of casings: ODP and TEFC.

ODP

ODP stands for "open drip proof." This means that the motor casing has open vents that allow for cooling. These vents are angled downward to prevent water from dripping directly onto the motor; however, they are still susceptible to wind-driven rain and splashing. Additionally, they are not protected from dust or other airborne contaminants, or vermin.

TEFC

TEFC stands for "totally enclosed fan cooled." This means that the motor casing is completely sealed with a fan blowing over it. The heat moves within the casing through convection and dissipates through the surface with assistance from the fan. These motors are protected from the outside environment.

Price Difference

TEFC motors are generally more expensive. This is because they contain an extra piece of equipment -- the fan -- and they serve a specialized purpose. Also, TEFC motors have a thinner, larger casing to allow for better heat dissipation, which adds to the cost.

Availability

Most manufacturers stock both ODP and TEFC motors. However, they are more likely to carry ODP. If you're purchasing a piece of equipment that already has a motor, such as a fan, it is probably equipped with an ODP motor.

Will A Tmobile Phone Work With A Prepaid Tmobile Sim Card

Because T-Mobile uses SIM card technology in both its prepaid and contract cell phones, T-Mobile users can easily change phones by swapping their SIM card from phone to phone. This is a prevalent request in the prepaid market, according to Cory Bukkila, an Electronics Team Lead for the Eden Prairie, Minn., Target. Bukkila noted that prepaid phones are fairly inexpensive-typically selling for between $20 and $100-but because of that price tag, they lack some options that are included in the more expensive contract phones.

Function

A SIM card is a small storage device that fits into the back of a cell phone. The card is needed to activate some makes of phones and stores personal information including contact information, text messages, caller ID information and other data. WiseGeek.com says to think of a SIM card as a "mini hard disk" for a cell phone. A prepaid SIM card will also store all of that information, but it’s also responsible for keeping track of how many minutes or dollars are left on a prepaid user’s account.

Benefits

The benefit of using a T-Mobile prepaid SIM card is that it can be placed into any T-Mobile phone and transfer data-including account balance, phone numbers and caller ID information-from phone to phone. This allows prepaid customers to upgrade or replace phones without the hassle of contacting all of their friends and family with a new phone number.

Reasons

The most common reason that people want to put their existing SIM card into a different phone is that the phone is old, broken, unwanted or some combination of the three, according to Bukkila. T-Mobile customers with a contract are eligible for cheap or sometimes free phone upgrades if they extend their contract. Prepaid customers, however, are not given the same option. According to Bukkila, the prepaid phones are often cheaper, more disposable models that lack a lot of high-end features, therefore prepaid users often come in more often looking for a different phone.

Challenges

Most retail stores-including Target-that sell contract cell phones are not allowed by T-Mobile to sell contract phones to a prepaid customer because T-Mobile discounts the phones as a way to entice customers into a contract, says Bukkila. He adds that retailers that don’t sell contracts and online sites like E-bay are the best options for getting a high-end phone to use with a prepaid SIM card. The price tag, he adds, will be higher, however, because there will not be a subsidy by T-Mobile.

Misconceptions

According to Bukkila, one common mistake made by consumers is their assumption that any phone that operates with a SIM card will work with any SIM card. This, however, is not the case. Cell phone carriers often "lock" their phones to their specific wireless network. Doing this helps ensure that only their SIM cards can be used with their cell phones. For example, adds Bukkila, a T-Mobile prepaid card will not work with an ATT phone, which also operates on a SIM card.

Retrieve Deleted Text From A Sim Card Phone

Global system for mobile phone, or GSM, networks use a device called a SIM card to store your mobile phone's contact information and text messages. Much like with a standard hard drive, any data that is deleted from the SIM card isn't actually gone. When you erase a text message it is simply hidden until a new text message is saved over it. If the old message hasn't yet been replaced with a new one, you can use a SIM card recovery tool to retrieve the deleted message and return it to your inbox.

Instructions

1. Connect your phone's USB cable to an open USB port on your computer. If you have a SIM computer card reader, you can instead remove the SIM card from the phone and insert it into the card reader.

2. Access an online source links that offers a SIM card recovery tool. Download one of the programs such as "Pro Data Doctor SIM Card Recovery," "SMS Recovery," or "001 Micron Sim Card Recovery." Follow the program's installation instructions.

3. Click the "Download" or "Read" icon. Select the drive that corresponds to your cell phone's USB cable or SIM card. Click "OK."

4. Select the "Scan" or "Recover" option. Wait for the program to search through the SIM card for deleted text messages.

5. Check through the list of text messages that appears on the right side of the screen. Click the "Sender Number" tab at the top of the screen to arrange the messages by the phone number from which they were sent.

6. Click the specific message you want to recover. Select the "Restore" or "Undelete" option to retrieve the message and save it in the phone's text message inbox.

What Are The Advantages Of Digital Cameras To Photojournalism

Digital cameras have enhanced on-camera functions over traditional film cameras.

Careers in photojournalism depend on the collection, editing and presentation of images for news sources. Similar to how a writer depends on his writing tools, a photojournalist relies on his camera to record and develop images, which are then used to present a story. Traditional photojournalists made use of film SLR and range finder cameras; however, DSLRs have become an increasingly popular tool due to the flexibility and range of options they provide.

Easy Photo Storage

Digital cameras use a number of different flash-type storage cards that slip in and out of the camera. Consumer-oriented cameras typically use SD or SDHC cards, while professional DSLRs use compact flash cards. These cards come in a variety of different storage sizes, with some capable of holding thousands of photos. Photojournalists may spend a couple of days or even months in the field, and the storage capabilities of these tiny cards make it possible to store large volumes of photos. The small physical size of the flash cards means they take up minimal space, and they're often resilient to moisture and other environmental conditions that typically pose problems for film media.

Editing Software

Digital cameras store images in a number of different formats such as jpeg and raw formats. Many software companies have designed a number of reliable and efficient programs to store, organize and process photos after they have been taken. This software allows the photographer to come back to the photos and make minor adjustments to make colors richer, improve sharpness or remove imperfections that take away from the quality of the shot. This makes it possible to increase the quality of any photos that photojournalists take in the field.

Enhanced User Functions

Many digital cameras come equipped with numerous features, including those that control the white balance and ISO of the image. Other cameras even include built-in software for changing the effects of each image. This makes it easy to adjust the settings before taking shots and allows the photojournalist to be prepared for almost every situation. The digital format is more easily manipulated than film and reduces the chance of missing shots because the camera is not ready. DSLR cameras also typically shoot at a higher frame rate, which is better for shooting action shots.

Wire Up 6x9 Speakers

6X9 inch speakers are larger and often more powerful than their standard 6.5 inch brethren. They often required custom fitting to be properly installed in a car. However, wiring a 6X9 is the same process as any other speaker. All that's required is speaker wire and speaker connectors.

Instructions

1. Connect the positive input, usually labeled with a "+" sign or colored red, of the speaker wire to the positive output on the power source. The power source will either be an amplifier or head unit.

2. Connect the negative input, usually labeled with a "-" sign or colored black, of the speaker wire to the negative output of the power source.

3. Cut the opposite end of the speaker wire using wire cutters to reveal the copper wire.

4. Attach speaker connectors to the positive and negative splits off the copper wire.

5. Attach the speaker connectors to the 6X9 inch speaker terminals. Be sure to connect the positive lead of the speaker connectors to the positive terminal on the speakers and negative lead to the negative terminal.

Wire Component Speakers To An Amp

Component speakers differ from regular car speakers in their construction. In place of a woofer for lows and a tweeter for highs combined in one platform, component speakers separate the woofer and tweeter. This allows better performance from the woofer and tweeter, and more mounting options, for better stereo imaging in the vehicles they're installed into. Since component speakers include two separate elements, they must be wired to an amp in a different manner than regular car speakers.

Instructions

1. Identify the elements of your component speaker system. There will be two woofers, two tweeters, and two crossovers. The crossovers separate the low- and high-frequency signals coming from the amplifier into the proper output for the woofers and tweeters.

2. Connect a length of speaker wire between the "R" (right) speaker outputs of the amplifier to the "Input" terminals of one of the crossovers. To connect to the terminals, strip the insulation from the wire so that 3/8 to 1/2 inch of bare wire is exposed, then loosen the terminals' set screws. Slide the bare wire underneath and tighten the screws. Connect the "+" of the amplifier output to the "+" of the crossover input, and the "-" to the "-".

3. Connect a tweeter to the crossover. The tweeter will already have two wires connected to it, one marked "+" and the other "-". Connect the wires to the terminals marked "Tweeter_ or "T" on the crossover.

4. Connect the woofer to the crossover. To connect to the crossover, strip the insulation from a piece of speaker wire so that 3/8 to 1/2 inch of bare wire is exposed, then loosen the terminals' set screws. Slide the bare wire underneath the terminals marked "woofer" or "W" and tighten the screws. Connect the "+" of the crossover output to the "+" of the woofer, and the "-" to the "-".

5. Repeat steps 2-4 with the other woofer, tweeter, and crossover. The component speakers are now wired to the amplifier.

Remove The Time & Date Stamp From A Digital Photo

Having the date and time stamped right across the front of a photo can not only block elements of the photo, but cause it to look cheap and unprofessional as well. If you want your photos to look clean and professional, the time and date need to be removed. There are two ways this can be done--by cropping, or by using a clone or rubber stamp tool in digital editing software.

Instructions

Using the Clone or Rubber Stamp Tool

1. Acquire a digital photo. This can be done either by transferring images from a digital camera or by scanning a photo into your computer.

2. Open the photo in your editing software.

3. Zoom in on the area with the date and time stamp.

4. Select the cloning or rubber stamp tool.

5. Set the area in the photo for the tool to copy. Chose a spot in the photo that resembles what is being blocked by the date and time stamp. For example, if the stamp is blocking part of someone's pants, select a similar area on their pants and copy that.

6. Click on the area of the date and time stamp you want to patch with your copied selection. This should cover it with a duplicate of the area you previously selected.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you have completely covered the date and time stamp.

Cropping

8. Open the image in your editing software.

9. Click on the object selection tool. In some programs it is referred to as the rectangular marquee tool or rectangular selection tool. The icon is usually shown as a rectangle or square with a dotted outline and is typically located on the standard toolbar.

10. Create a rectangle with the selection tool over the area of the photo you would like to keep. For example, if you have a full-body photograph of a person but would just like to include their face, use the selection tool to select only their face. This is normally done by clicking on the top left corner of where you would like to begin your selection, holding down the left mouse button, and then dragging the marquee at a diagonal, vertically, or to the right until you have the size you desire.

11. Copy your selection and paste it into a new document. It should now be cropped the way you wish, but if you are unhappy with it you may need to try again. Sometimes it takes practice to get the proper area selected.

12. Save the photo.

Replace An Answering Machine With Voice Mail

Voice mail offers several advantages over an answering machine. It is easily accessible remotely, and can be accessed independently of the phone line, so important phone calls aren't thwarted by a busy signal. In addition, voice mail is more reliable than an answering machine. It is unaffected by loose wires or power outages. Replacing your answering machine with voice mail can seem intimidating initially, but it is quite simple.

Instructions

Purchase a Voice Mail System

1. Consider how many mailboxes your voice mail system will need. Standard voice mail packages come with one mailbox for all the users involved, while an expanded service package provides multiple mailboxes that can be accessed from the voice mail's menu.

2. Examine how long voice mail messages will be kept in the mailbox. The voice mail's mailbox keeps recorded messages for a limited amount of time before deleting them. This can be anywhere from 14 to 21 days.

3. Decide on how much time should be allotted for a voice mail message. Most companies offer a 3-minute limit, while others may provide up to 5 minutes to leave a message.

4. Figure out how many messages the voice mail system should be able to store. Most companies offer a storage space of 20 messages, with more space available upon purchasing an extended plan.

5. Look at the extra features available. Some advanced features will translate your voice mail into text, and then send the voice mail to an email account of your choice. Others will send you an email message to let you know you have voice mail, and a number of companies provide a number to dial to check your voice mail remotely. A more recent development allows faxes to be sent to a voice mail system and retrieved by the mailbox's owner at her convenience.

Configure the Voice Mail System

6. Dial into the voice mail system and get acquainted with the menu. Many voice mail systems have a set of instructions designed specifically for the first-time user, but after that, the user will be given a pre-generated voice mail. Learn what telephone buttons will perform what actions, and don't worry if you are slightly confused at first, as you'll learn with experience.

7. Keep a printout of the menu options for easy reference.

8. Replace the preset personal identification number with a personalized one. The voice mail system will usually generate a random personal identification number that you can then change as you see fit. Make sure to memorize your personal identification number, or replace it with a number that is meaningful to you in some way.

9. Record a personal greeting for people who have been transferred to your voice mail system. Keep it simple-the way you would when recording a message for an answering machine. Make sure to ask people to leave a call-back number, along with a brief message as to why they are contacting you.

10. Disconnect your answering machine from the telephone line. While this is not exactly required, keeping your answering machine connected to the telephone line after you replace it with voice mail may result in it answering calls before voice mail does, completely invalidating your purchase.

What Is An Antenna Booster For Cell Phones

Cell phones have become nearly universal. However, they do not always get the strongest signal. So-called antenna boosters claim to strengthen the signal for a cell phone. However there is significant debate about whether antenna boosters for cell phones work. There seems to be no conclusive evidence that cell phone antenna boosters make a significant improvement in signal strength.

Description

Most cell phone antenna boosters look like paper-thin pieces of plastic with the configuration stamped or printed onto them. They are designed to be attached to the cell phone near the battery. The principle is that the circuitry imprinted on the booster is enhanced by the charge of the battery, which, in turn, helps the phone receive a better signal.

Tests on Analog Phones

Analog phones are nearly as extinct as dinosaurs; however, some people have hung onto them. Some tests with antenna boosters on analog phones reported increased signal strength. In addition, some analog users reported decreased static, which can be a problem with older cell phones.

Tests on Digital Phones

Results for tests of antenna boosters on digital phones was mixed. One set of tests reported modest but definite improvement in signal strength. Other tests reported no improvement at all. Still other testers reported that antenna boosters actually degraded the quality of the performance of digital cell phones.

Accept No Substitutes?

For the tests which reported increased signal strength with cell phone antenna boosters, the tester concluded that a particular brand, the Cell Phone Antenna Booster, was effective in increasing signal strength. On the other hand, the tester declared so-called knockoffs, which were were less expensive, to be no more than scams.

Considerations

Cell phones work by transmitting and receiving radio signals. This means that cell phones work best when there is little or no interference, such as concrete walls. A cell phone booster can only enhance a signal. Cell phone antenna boosters or even actual cell phone antennas often have little effect where radio signals are prevented from reaching the cell phone.

Repair The Polaroid Izone 300

Make minor repairs to your Polaroid iZone 300 Camera

Polaroid cameras might have gone out of style when digital cameras first arose, but now they are back with the popular i-Zone models. These cameras create sticker-sized instant photos that users can share with friends instantly. When an i-Zone 300 camera is not working properly, there are usually only a couple of issues that could be causing problems. Try some quick fixes before contacting Polaroid for additional help.

Instructions

1. Check that the batteries are still good by looking for the ready light. If it does not glow within 20 seconds of turning the camera on, the batteries need to be replaced. Replace with two new alkaline AA batteries.

2. Verify that you are using the correct settings for the current conditions. A picture that is too dark may need a flash setting, and a picture that is too light is either shot from a position too close to the subject, or was shot with a flash when it was not needed.

3. Remove jammed film by gently tugging on the exposed tab. If the film will not advance, replace the film. Do not ever cut the film for your iZone camera except in the exact locations indicated on the film strip, because the film contains a caustic paste that can irritate the skin and eyes.

4. Pull the exposed film straight from the camera instead of at an angle. Pulling it at the wrong angle can cause blue or blurred streaks on the photos.

What Is The Sony Composite Av Cable For

With multiple devices of varying levels of audio and visual quality, it can be difficult to determine which cables are suitable for which product. For those who do not own a high-definition television, it can be even more frustrating to find the correct cable. Sony products, specifically Sony video game consoles, require certain composite cables to allow users to enjoy their consoles through their standard definition television sets.

Composite Cable

Composite cables utilize an RCA plug and are usually batched in threes: one for standard definition video, and two for stereo (left and right channels) audio. Cables used to transmit mono audio will only feature one video cable and one audio cable. Each plug is color-coded. Yellow identifies the video cable, and red and white identify the audio cables. They can only transmit analog signals, as opposed to high-definition digital signals.

From Console to TV

In order for a video game console to display itself on a television, composite cables are necessary to transmit the information. Each brand of console requires a composite cable that features the corresponding female jack. A composite cable used for the Nintendo Wii, for example, will not work for a Sony PlayStation.

PSP

Most common are Sony composite cables for the PlayStation Portable (PSP). They allow the user to see the display of the hand held device on a larger television set. Component cables are necessary to view and play PSP games through a television screen, but the composite cable is able to transmit music, pictures and video through a television.

PS3

Although the PlayStation 3 generates a high-definition output (utilizing a component cable), a composite cable specific to the PS3 can be used for televisions unable to accommodate digital input. Both the display and audio will exhibit losses in quality. The PS3 composite cable is also compatible with the PS2 and PS1.

Camcorders

Sony produces composite cables for camcorders. Useful for televisions unequipped to receive digital high-definition signals, they allow video or images from the camcorder to be displayed onto a television set where it can subsequently be recorded onto a recordable DVD or VHS tape.

Generic Cable

Sony also produces generic composite cables not specific to any particular console or device. They are used to transmit a signal from one source, such as a DVD player or a receiver, to another, such as a television or DVD recorder.

Repair Panasonic Video

Repairing a Panasonic video device, be it a camcorder or video player, is not for those inexperienced in high-tech electronics. Video equipment employs sophisticated engineering and there are no user-serviceable parts inside. However, there are a few troubleshooting steps one can try without causing further damage to the unit.

Power Troubleshooting

Check to see that there is electrical power going to the unit. In the case of battery-powered units, ensure that the battery is sufficiently charged. Rechargeable batteries have a limited life and their chargers can sometimes malfunction. Try swapping out the battery with one that is known to work, use the A/C adapter that came with the device or bring the battery and the charger to a service center for testing.

Video Head Cleaning

If your video plays back or records poorly, the cause may be dirty heads. Video tape players and camcorders which record directly to tape need periodic cleaning with a tape head cleaner available at department and electronic stores. If cleaning doesn't clear up the problem, the heads may need to be replaced or aligned by a trained service technician.

Other Troubleshooting Ideas

Consult your Panasonic owner's manual for other troubleshooting ideas. These may include resetting the unit, replacing any internal "button" batteries, or looking up displayed error codes that may give you an idea of what is causing the trouble.

Factory Servicing

If all else fails, go the the Panasonic website for service return information or drop the camera off at a local authorized Panasonic repair shop. If sending the unit to Panasonic for service, you will pay the shipping to the facility and await an estimate by phone or email. If the estimate is not within your budget, the service facility will send it back at their expense.

Use Manual Exposure On Canon Dslr

Canon has a fairly extensive collection of digital SLR (DSLR) cameras that are designed for amatuer photographers who want to do a little more with their photos as well as professional photographers who are using their camera to make a living. If you have recently purchased a DSLR, using the manual exposure on the camera is fairly easy to do and only requires the turn of a few buttons.

Instructions

1. Turn the wheel at the top of the camera to the "P." In the case of the select wheel on the Canon DSLR, "P" stands for "Program."

2. Press the button on the back of the camera marked "ISO" to manually adjust the exposure or "film speed" in your camera. The ISO setting in your camera determines how sensitive your cameras sensor is to light. Typically you will want to use a low ISO setting, such as 100, for exceptionally bright situations, and a high ISO setting, such as 1600, for lower light situations.

3. Take a few test photos with your new exposure setting. If a picture appears blurry or your camera has an exceptionally hard time capturing a particular photo, then you may need to change your exposure to a higher or lower setting.

4. Turn the wheel on the top of your camera back to the green square icon in order to have the camera automatically set its exposure for future pictures.

Change The Timer Duration In A Nikon Coolpix

Nikon COOLPIX cameras have a simple navigation system that allows users to change options easily. For those occasions when you want to take a picture, but want to include yourself in the frame, the cameras have a timer option provided. To make sure that you are not having to run extremely fast to dive into the photo or make your subjects sit with smiles on their faces for a long time, Nikon provides an option of how much time you allow before the photo is taken.

Instructions

Directions

1. Turn on the camera; set to the desired shooting mode. Set this according to what you are taking a picture of and the light conditions in which it is being taken.

2. Display the self-timer menu. Do this by pressing in the direction of the timer icon on the camera's main navigation button.

3. Highlight the option desired. Timing options are a three-second delay or a 10-second delay. Base your delay on how long it will take to get the subject of the picture arranged and in place.

4. Press the "OK" button. A timer icon should appear on the main screen of the camera on the right hand side.

Use A Dvr Recorder

A Digital Video Recorder (DVR) is used to record and replay television shows by using a "hard drive much like much like the one in a computer," according to Consumer Reports.org. DVRs are used along with cable or satellite service to access live television programs. Choices include a combination cable box with DVR capability for recording, or a stand-alone box using TiVo, currently the main service provider. An October 2009 study in India by NDS Group found that 88% of consumers said having a DVR makes TV viewing more enjoyable, and 77% wouldn't live without a DVR once they tried it.

Instructions

Use a DVR Recorder

1. Decide whether to add DVR service to your existing cable plan or add TiVo service separately. Contact your cable company to exchange equipment or purchase a TiVo box at a retail electronics store. Connect the cables to the DVR machine and find the main menu.

2. To record a single TV episode, you have three options. If the show is live, press the record button. Most DVR services will allow you to watch another channel while it records. If the show is not live, you can search for shows using the guide or typing in the name. To use the guide, find the channel list of current shows and move the cursor to the desired show, then press record. To search for a show, select the search option and type in the name of the show with your remote. You will then be given the option to record a single episode or the entire series.

3. To record a series, follow the steps for a single episode above, but be sure to select the series option.

4. Most DVR services allow you to record two shows at once and flip between only those two channels. If one show is being recorded, you may watch any other channel during that time. Also, if you are watching a recorded DVR program, any scheduled recordings will still record while you watch your selected program.

5. Most DVRs have an icon showing your current capacity level. As Consumer Reports warns, one disadvantage of a DVR is "that capacity is limited by the size of the drive, so it's not a good way to archive programs indefinitely." You will have to monitor the level of memory and deleted viewed shows to allow new ones to record.

Build A Light Box

My light box made from a converted shadow box.

However you use it, a light box essentially exists as a tracing tool and can be an invaluable asset to a craft room or studio. By converting a shadow box into a light box much of the hard part is done and you'll have a large surface to work with.

Instructions

Prepare the Glass

1. Remove the screws holding the glass in place in the shadowbox.

2. Clean the top surface of the glass.

3. Brush on a thick layer of etching solution and wait the time indicated on the bottle before carefully rinsing it off.

4. When finished, replace the glass in the shadow box.

Prepare the Box

5. Measure the shortest inside distance of your shadowbox.

6. Cut your 1-by-1 to to this measurement.

7. Place the two-hole strap and lamp housing where it will go on the 1-by-1 and mark the openings.

8. Drill a starter hole at each mark for the strap.

9. Apply wood glue to the ends of the 1-by-1 and put the 1-by-1 in place and let dry. This will hold the wood in place during the next steps.

10. Drill a hole through the side of the shadow box and into the 1-by-1. Repeat on the other side and screw the 1-by-1 into place.

11. Replace the lamp housing and strap on the 1-by-1, lining it up with the drilled holes and screw into place.

12. Decide where you want your cord to come from and drill a notch large enough for the cord to fit through so your box doesn't rock as you work.

13. Add the light bulb and you are finished!

Repair A Searchlight Parabolic Reflector

Searchlights are amplified by the geometric shape of the reflector behind them.

The parabolic reflector in a searchlight is a reflective panel that increases the amount of light given off by a searchlight. Without a reflector, all the light given off by the lighting element would be lost in the searchlight itself. If reflector panels are damaged, the searchlight can lose significant amounts of its lighting ability. Repairing the damage depends upon the damage and the strength of the light itself, as klieg lamps can burn some repair work.

Instructions

1. Turn searchlight off, then unplug the light from either the outlet, generator or battery pack that supplies it. Open the front of the searchlight, either by unscrewing the font bezel by rotating it by hand, or removing it via a pressure clasp, depending upon the make and model of searchlight.

2. Pull the light bulb or lighting element out of the searchlight, carefully putting it aside, as the filaments in many searchlights are very fragile. Remove the reflector by hand; it is never secured due to thermal expansion, but simply held in place by the pressure of the front bezel. Use work gloves and safety goggles due to the danger of cuts from a broken reflector. If the reflector is too badly broken then it would be best to replace it and have the old one recycled.

3. Tape the cracks in the reflector with aluminum tape, if the searchlight is an incandescent-powered lamp. While the aluminum can survive higher temperatures, the adhesive will bake off under higher temperatures. If the searchlight is a klieg lamp or other esoteric lighting element, then you will need to solder the pieces back together, being careful to preserve the original geometric shape of the reflector.

4. Slide the reflector back in and replace the lightening element. Screw the front bezel back on and plug the power supply back into the searchlight. Turn the searchlight on to verify that the reflector is reflecting.

Throat microphones differ from conventional microphones in that they attach directly to the throat and take audio input from the larynx. This input design allows for a clear and unadulterated vocal signal that is unaffected by exterior noises. Throat mics are common with military pilots and nightclub DJs who need to communicate in extremely noisy environments.

Instructions

1. Fit the throat microphone around your neck so it is securely fastened in place. The transponders (mic pickups) should rest comfortably on your throat. There are often two transponders, both of which should be making solid contact with the throat.

2. Fasten the throat strap at the back of your neck so it anchors the unit and keeps it in place.

3. Fit the ear piece into the desired listening ear. If there are two ear pieces, then place both of them in your ears.

4. Plug the mic output cable into the transmitting or receiving device. If the throat mic is wireless and transmits over radio waves (like a two-way radio), then the mic cable will attach to the transmission box that comes with the throat mic. If the mic will be connected to a receiving device like a cell phone or computer, plug the mic cable into the device's audio input port.

5. Press and hold down the push-to-talk (PTT) button each time you wish to communicate on the throat mic. Release the button when you've finished communication and are ready to listen.

6. Tune the receiving device (if the mic is wireless) to the broadcasting frequency. This frequency is different for all mics and can be found on the front of the throat mic's box or in the manual.

7. Test the mic several times before putting into full operation by asking someone to listen on the other end of the radio (wireless) or by recording some audio (computer). If the sound is unclear or choppy, readjust the sensors around the throat until the audio quality improves.

The Canon Digital Rebel is a digital single lens reflex camera that allows the user to get the perfect picture by customizing and adjusting his shot. The beginner-friendly camera has an adjustable lens for getting the desired focus on the picture and for taking long-distance shots. Learn the basic functions and operate the Rebel.

Instructions

1. Insert the BP-511 battery into the compartment. The battery door is marked at the rear of the camera. The Rebel uses a BP-511 lithium ion rechargeable battery pack, which is included in the camera package.

2. Insert a SD memory card into the camera. The memory card slot is marked to the side of the camera, and the card slides into place. This does not come with the camera and will need to be purchased separately.

3. Attach the adjustable lens onto the front of the camera. There are colored marks around the lens, which is repeated on the lens casing itself. Match the colors up and twist gently until the lens clicks into place.

4. Turn on the camera. The power switch is on the top right-hand side of the camera and is clearly marked with an "On" and "Off" option. Once the camera is powered on, the LCD screen will light up.

5. Turn the focus switch to the "AF" position. This is just behind the lens at the front of the camera. This will enable the camera to automatically focus your shots.

6. Move the mode dial to "Full Auto." The mode switch is at the top of the camera next to the power switch. The Full Auto position is a green rectangular mark. Full Auto enables the camera to automatically adjust to the light settings, and the flash will operate when needed.

7. Look through the viewfinder to focus on your picture. Press the shutter down halfway and let the object come into focus. Depress the shutter fully and complete taking the picture.

Pros & Cons Of A Hard Disk Camcorder

Camcorders with hard disks offer much more storage capacity.

Since the dawn of home video, operating a camcorder has meant juggling and managing some sort of media, be it tapes or flash cards. The development camcorders able to store video directly to an internal hard drive has eliminated the need for storage media and streamlined the shooting process. Although the innovation is handy, it may not be for every amateur videographer.

Pro: Lots of Storage

Because hard drives are able to hold data more densely than flash storage technologies, a hard disk camcorder will be able to capture much more than a camcorder with flash media storage. Entry-level hard disk camcorders are typically outfitted with about 120 GB of storage space, which provides enough storage for about 100 hours of standard-definition video depending upon camera settings and video quality.

Con: Unexpandable Storage

Hard disks can hold a lot of video, but when they're full, you're unable to swap them out for a blank media to record onto. For travelers with no access to a laptop upon which video can be downloaded, this may provide a limiting factor.

Pro: Easy Searching

A hard drive provides quick, nonlinear access to your video, making it easy---and faster than many flash mediums---to track down the portion of video you would like to use.

Con: Fragile Storage Medium

Although advances in hard-drive technology have made them much more shock resistant in recent years, hard disk camcorders are still more prone to losing or corrupting data if they're dropped from a large height onto an unforgiving surface than flash storage units are.

Pro: HD Ready

Many hard disk cameras are HD cameras, allowing users the option to shoot in high resolution and produce better quality video. The ample storage space provided by a hard disk enables more capacity to shoot HD video than many flash cameras.

Con: Exspense

While manufacturers offer a few affordable hard disk camcorders, most are aimed at more avid videographers, and come with a less than entry-level price tag. Users on a budget may opt to purchase a flash-based handheld and a slew of storage rather than committing to the price tag of a hard disk camcorder.

Car Audio Amplifier Installation Tips

A car audio amplifier will improve the sound of your car audio system, no matter what volume you like to listen to your music at. Amplifiers can be used to power full-range speakers, reproducing the highs and lows with excellent power and clarity, or they can be used to power subwoofers for profound and beefy lows. However you want to use your amplifier, there are some important things to consider and plan before you start installing it.

Location

An ideal location will combine several elements, including security, convenience and aesthetics. In most cases, it's a good idea to place the amp in a location that isn't readily apparent to outside observers, so it's less of a target for thieves. Obviously, if you want to show off your car audio system and amplifier, that's a moot point. Convenience dictates a location where the amp is easily accessible for adjustments, and is close to power and speaker connections. If you want to show off your amp, aesthetics are important--you want the amp to look good.

In most sedans, the trunk fits the bill very well as an amp location. Trucks present more challenges, but behind or below the seats is often a good location. An SUV doesn't have a trunk, so mounting the amplifier under the seat is often the best location to place the amp.

Selecting Proper Wiring

The wires connecting into and out of your amplifier perform the important functions of carrying power, providing input signals and sending signals to the speakers. Poor quality wires and cables, or wires that are too thin, can degrade the amplifier's performance.

For power cables, use eight-gauge wire at a minimum. If the amplifier has an RMS wattage output of over 250 watts, step up to four-gauge wire. Consult your amplifier's manual for recommendations, and remember that it's never bad to use thicker wire (lower gauge number).

Input RCA cables that carry the signal to your amplifier should be of good quality and shielded for automotive use. Gold-plated connectors transfer signal more efficiently and resist oxidation.

Speaker wire follows the same principle as power wire--the thicker the better. For most auto applications 14-gauge speaker wire is an excellent choice. If powering a large subwoofer, step up to 12-gauge wire.

Routing the Wiring

There are three sets of wires that you'll need to route to install your amplifier: power and ground, input wiring and output wiring.

The power and ground wiring provides the 12-volt signal path that's necessary for the amplifier to operate. A power cable will need to be run from the battery to the amplifier, and a ground cable from the amplifier to a grounding point on the car body. To run the power cable from the battery to the amplifier you'll need to route the cable through the firewall and then to the amplifier location. Look underneath the dashboard for spots where cables are routed into the car's interior from the engine compartment. In many cases, you can also push your power cable through one of these openings as well. In cases where you can't, a hole can be drilled through the firewall, and the cable passed through a rubber grommet you install in the hole. Once in the car interior, remove the scuff plates by the door and roll back the carpet--lay the power cable underneath the carpet alongside the door, and route it back to the amplifier location. If the amp's in the trunk, you can usually find a small opening underneath the rear seat that provides access.

The input wiring usually consists of a set or more of RCA cables attached to the back of the car stereo, and then routed to the amplifier. Feed the cables behind the dashboard and then down into the kick panels. From their run the cables underneath the carpeting, using the method described above.

Output wiring is the speaker wiring that runs from the amplifier to the speakers or subwoofer. If you're attaching the amplifier to a sub, the task is simple and clearcut, as the sub is usually very close to the amplifier. In cases where you're running speaker wiring to speakers in the car, you'll need to use the same principles outlined above--roll the carpet back and work your wiring to its destination underneath the carpet.
