Extend The Life Of Portable Dvd Batteries

So many of our electrical gadgets use batteries and too often we're left with no batteries to replace them with. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to extend the life of your portable DVD batteries.

Instructions

1. Make sure the battery is fully charged prior to use. This may sound obvious, but it works. Fully charging your battery prior to each use will extend the time the battery holds the charge as well as the over all life of the battery itself.

2. Use the headphones when watching DVD's. Since most of us lower the sound significantly when using headphones, this uses less of the battery power, thereby extending the battery life.

3. Remove the batteries when not in use and store them in the DVD player backwards to extend the life of each battery.

4. Store your DVD player in a cool and dry location when not in use. Extreme temperature swings tend to drain battery power.

5. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when caring for the batteries in your DVD player. While there is some evidence that periodically fully draining the batteries prior to recharging may be beneficial, check the manufacturer's website to avoid damaging the batteries.

6. Drain the batteries to approximately half of their life and store in the refrigerator. Some tests indicate this can extend the life of the batteries, although you must allow them to reach room temperature prior to use. Not doing can ruin the batteries, and may damage the DVD player as well.

How Long Should A Car Battery Last

The average life of a car battery is in the range of three to five years. Several factors can lead to a battery's short lifespan. Many people's driving habits contribute to this, leading to the battery dying closer to the three-year range.

Significance

Exposing the battery to extreme temperatures, hot or cold, can shorten the battery's life span and cause starting problems as the temperature affects the chemical reaction required.

Effects

The battery's life can be shortened by several starting cycles and short drive times within a relatively short time frame.

Time Frame

The car needs to run for at least 20 minutes on average for the alternator to fully recharge the battery.

Prevention/Solution

Many batteries are encased in an insulated jacket to help it withstand cold temperatures. Many people, even professional mechanics, often remove this cover, putting the battery at risk of a shorter life.

Warning

A car battery's life can also be shortened if it is a standard "starter" battery used in a car containing electronic devices like TVs and DVD players.

Clean Internal Dust From A Nikon 70300 Vr

Nikon 70-300 Zoom VR lens

The Nikon 70-300 Zoom VR (Vibration Reduction) lens is a high-performance super telephoto lens and a perfect choice for outdoor sports and wildlife photography. Often times lens-cleaning supplies are overlooked by the amateur photographer, but all photographers have to deal with dust entering the camera at some point. Though the task of cleaning off internal dust from a Nikon 70-300 VR can seem daunting, cleaning internal dust from a Nikon 70-300 VR is actually easy.

Instructions

Step 1

1. Nikon 70-300 VR lens internal

Detach lens from camera so you are viewing the internal part.

2. Remove fingerprints with a circular wipe of a microfiber cloth.

3. Remove loose dust with blower before using lens-cleaning fluid. Recurrent dirt should be removed with lens-cleaning fluid.

4. Apply one or two drips of lens-cleaning fluid on lens tissue, and wipe glass surface in a gentle circular motion.

5. Use dry lens tissue to remove residue if needed. Do not apply cleaning fluid directly onto lens surface.

6. Purchase canned air to blow any other loose dust away. The nozzle of the canned air should be at least 3 to 5 inches away from the glass---if the nozzle is too close, it will leave a condensation ring on the lens.

7. Reattach lens to the camera and test. The resulting image should not have any signs of dust or spots. Repeat steps 1 through 8 if there are signs of dust or spots.

Compare International Cell Phone Plans

1. 2

Next

SINGLE PAGE

Choosing a carrier for your international calling can be an arduous process. Comparison shopping and research will give one the necessary data to make an informed decision. Budget, frequency of call and type of cell phone all make a difference to the final choice. Look below for some tips on compare international cell phone plans.

Instructions

1. Know first which countries and area codes you intend to utilize in your international cell phone plan. Getting a great rate for Japan will have little bearing if your intention is to call Germany. A list of the numbers will be useful when explaining your needs to potential carriers. Be aware that some countries have very high rates where others are often less than state to state calling charges.

2. Determine which cell phone carriers in your area offer international rates and plans.

3. Realize the scope or limits to your comparison shopping based on your geographical location. After a few calls you may realize that only one, possibly two, carriers in your area offer international rates and plans. A simple side by side comparison works best at this point although the consideration items in Step 4 are still important.

4. Create a checklist of necessities for your ideal international calling plan and write them down. Consider such details as the rate per minute, connection fees, monthly charges, plan charges, day and night rates, weekend rates, taxes and other fees. It is important also to find out whether your current cell phone uses your new plan or whether a new phone from the carrier is part of the economic equation.

5. Turn your checklist into a grid chart with potential carriers and their contact information in a column on the left hand side of the page and the specifics from Step 4 across the top of the page. Underneath each listed item leave a space for each carrier's information. The chart can be a paper and pencil affair or a fancy Excel document, whichever works best for you and your needs.

6. Call or contact by email each carrier on your list asking for specific details of their international plan and rates. Be sure to fill the information out in the correct column of your comparison chart. Try to stick to your own checklist even when the customer service operator has other ideas because you will be the one footing the bill.

7. Review your chart selecting the carrier and plan that best suits your calling needs and budget. It is good to remember that charts are great for comparison shopping across the board and do not have to be limited to choosing an international cell phone plan.

Adjust Conveyor Belts

Conveyor belts come in different types of devices such treadmills and other exercise equipment. After continued use, a conveyor belt may become off track and it will need to be centered again or adjusted. You can get the belt back on track with a few basic tools and your piece of equipment should work properly again.

Instructions

1. Figure out which direction the belt should go. If the belt is tracking to the left, then you should move it to the right until it is centered.

2. Find the tracking roller, which is typically at one end or the other. It may look as if there are two tracking rollers, but one roller is to tension the belt and the other is to track the belt. If you see two adjustable rollers, use the roller furthest away from the drive roller. Use an open-end wrench to loosen the lock nuts on the jack rods or bolts to adjust the pulley left or right.

3. Adjust the tracking roller out if the belt is moving to the right while you are facing it. Tightening the jack bolts with the wrench pushes the roller in, and loosening the jack bolts pushes the roller out in relation to the belt. If the right side the roller is out of slot, ease off the left end of the roller tension. The belt has a tendency to move to the end of the roller that has less resistance.

4. Carefully run the conveyor while pushing the belt in the direction you need it to go with the heel of your palm on the top side of the belt. Continue doing this until the belt begins to move by itself. Adjust the belt and roller back in the opposite direction with a see-sawing motion to get the belt where you need it.

What Are The Different Types Of Night Vision Goggles

Optical instruments aid your ability to see clearly in otherwise difficult environments. Humans, compared to other species, have significantly poorer night vision. In order to see clearly in the dark, some people use night vision goggles. Night vision goggles can produce images in the lowest levels of light. There are a few different types of night vision goggles available; each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Passive Night Vision Goggles

Passive night vision goggles accumulate the ambient light within the user's general area, such as stars in the night sky. Through the use of embedded light intensifiers, the light is magnified several times over. The user then can view objects, other people, and their surroundings in great detail over a fairly long distance. The color green is used to display these images to the user. This color allows users to discern detailed images easier than they would with a brighter color such as red or yellow. Additionally, the green color helps the eyes to readjust to natural environments when the goggles are taken off.

Active Night Vision Goggles

Instead of using natural light as a source, active night vision goggles emit an infrared light source. An image is produced from the reflection of the infrared light. Because the light source is artificially produced, active night vision produces higher resolution images than their passive night vision counterparts. Commercial equipment such as home surveillance devices use this technology. The military shies away from using active night vision goggles, as the infrared light source can compromise the user's location.

Thermal Imaging

Thermal imaging goggles are night vision goggles that can function without any light. Thermal imaging goggles perceive thermal radiation. Thermal radiation is any radiation emitted from material due to the material's temperature. Thermal imaging goggles can see through total darkness, and weather obstructions such as rain, fog, and smoke, as long as the slightest amount of thermal activity is present. United States armed forces use thermal imaging devices when scanning a general area and acquiring a target.

Troubleshoot Directv With A Tivo Receiver

So you want to troubleshoot DIRECTV with a TiVo receiver? There are a couple of things you can do on your own to see what the problem is and perhaps fix it before you call technical support. However, if the problem lies with your box or the dish, you will probably wind up with someone at your house to help out. Read on to learn more about troubleshoot DIRECTV with a TiVo receiver.

Instructions

1. Understand that 95 percent of any problem that pertain to electronics can be solved by simply unplugging the unit for about 90 seconds, then plugging it back in. Do this, maybe two or three times, before proceeding.

2. If you are still having problems, press the "Menu" button on your remote, and enter the setup menu. If you have one of the newer boxes, you will be able to click on "Info" and "Test," then move the cursor over to system test, and click "Run Test."

3. If your tuners one and two come back with 70 percent or better results, your dish and connections are fine. If either come back somewhere between 1 percent and say 60 percent, then the problem lies with your dish. Most people have these dishes installed on the roof, so it is not recommend trying to fix this yourself. Call a technician. However, if you can adjust it yourself, go to the satellite and antenna setup area, and click on "View Signal Strength." Have someone adjust the dish while someone watches the signal strength. Keep adjusting until the strength exceeds 70 percent.

4. If either tuner one or two comes back at 0 percent, the problem usually lies with the wiring (although there could be a solid object between your dish and the sky). Check the back of the satellite box, and make sure both wires are firmly attached. If they are, it is recommend that you call a technician, since the next logical point to check is at the dish, or at the satellite splitter if you have one. If you can check these two areas safely, do so and make sure all the connections are solid. If they are, call a technician.

Disable Nextel Direct Connect

Direct Connect is a two-way radio feature included in cellular phones on the Nextel network. Using Direct Connect, you can contact someone instantly as though you were using a walkie-talkie. While this feature is useful for some, it can become bothersome if you're constantly being paged via Direct Connect. Fortunately, there are a few ways you can disable this feature. To learn how, you can follow a few basic steps.

Instructions

1. Turn off your speakerphone setting. You can do this by holding down on the "Speakerphone" button for a few seconds. A beep will let you know that speakerphone has been turned off. Should another Direct Connect user try to contact you, you'll have to accept the call first.

2. Activate "Vibrate" mode. This will not only silence the walkie-talkie portion of your Direct Connect feature, it will also silence all other call alerts. If you really don't want to be bothered, the Vibrate setting is a good mode to be in.

3. Contact Nextel and ask them to completely remove the Direct Connect service from your plan. This option is only for those who want to do away with Direct Connect completely. Once the feature is taken off your plan, you won't be able to use it again without contacting Nextel and asking the company to re-add it.

Main Components Of Laser Tag Guns

Laser tag

Laser tag is a combat game that uses special guns that shoot beams of light. Sensors that are usually head-mounted or vest-mounted record light strikes and eliminate a player after a certain number of "hits." And since there's no physical projectile being fired, laser tag doesn't subject players to pain like paintball does. The guns consist of a stock, trigger, battery pack and charger, laser and laser encoder.

Stock

The stock is the frame that holds all of the components of the gun together. If it is a rifle style, it must fit comfortably against the shoulder with the shooter's eye looking over the top of the barrel and with the shooter's index finger in a comfortable position to pull the trigger. Styles vary. Some guns look like military rifles and some have a more science-fiction appearance. Pistol-type guns must look like a real pistol and not be too heavy.

Trigger

Usually, triggers are simply levers that activate a switch that turns on the light beam. Because it is important to conserve battery power, sometimes the triggers are more complicated. Several simple mechanisms (some mechanical and some electrical) can ensure that a single trigger pull only operates the light beam for a predetermined amount of time. To make another shot, the trigger must be pulled again.

Battery Pack and Charger

The battery pack (and sometimes the charger) fit into the stock. This is one of the big reasons that rifle-style guns are more popular than pistol-style guns--they can hold more batteries. Typically the gun batteries also power the sensors through a connecting wire. In some arcades, the players wear vests that connect to both the sensors and the gun. The vest also holds the batteries, which makes pistol-type guns more feasible.

Laser

Some laser guns really shoot laser beams (laser pointers are used) and some shoot only infrared beams. Most shooters prefer lasers because you can see the beam, but stealth shooters prefer infrared. Lasers require more battery power than infrared projectors.

Laser Encoder

The laser (or infrared) beam is not just a beam of light. It also carries information. This is similar to the way that the infrared beam that comes out of your TV remote control is encoded with information. The information on your TV remote's beam codes for on/off, mute, last channel, etc. The beam coming from a laser tag gun can encode information such as which team you are on and if the shooter is "dead" or not. The gun contains a chip that encodes the signals.

Cable Box Receiver Work

What Does the Cable Receiver Do?

Cable companies wire homes specifically to deliver programming to televisions. Cable lines run to homes, entering the house and connecting to a splitter which distributes a signal to different points of the house. The cable line carries programming to the television, where it plugs into the converter box.

The converter reads the signal. Cable providers encode signals to prevent theft. In the past, different levels of service would be scrambled to ensure that the customer received the channels for which he paid. During the 1980s and 1990s, this was relegated to premium movie channels like HBO or Cinemax. The advent of digital cable in the late 1990s allowed cable companies to protect each channel equally. The cable box receives the signals which are paid for and blocks access to channels which are not subscribed to or are pay per view.

Technical Detail

Cable signals enter the receiver box through coaxial cable--a thick black cable with either gold or stainless steel fittings. The coaxial cable plugs directly into the receiver, which decodes the incoming signal and prepares it for display. The user chooses channels using a remote control, and the receiver box decodes the correct incoming signal to provide an on-screen display. Video enters the receiver in a compressed format, which allows for 300 to 400 channels to be transmitted at once. Video and audio information leave the receiver in one of two manners. A second coaxial cable connects the television and receiver, transmitting the signal. The other method is through the use of component cables. This provides the clearest and highest quality audio and video. Yellow, red and white cables can be connected to the receiver and hook into the television. Each plug carries separate video and stereo signals.

Newer televisions may have the option to connect with five-plug component cables, as opposed to the previously mentioned three-plug connection. This allows for each video channel of color to be transmitted separately, insuring the highest quality color. High-definition receivers will also have HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) ports which transmit data to the television.

A Home Theatre Accessory

Cable companies have gone to great lengths to improve features of their digital product. Most cable systems offer receivers with personal video recorders (PVRs), which allow viewers to record and view programming without using video tape, or pause and/or rewind live television.

Larger cable companies now provide on-demand programming, which permits users to call up movies or television shows at their convenience and watch them outside of the programs typical broadcast schedule. In addition, companies offer specific services through their cable boxes. In many markets, Time Warner Cable offers users the ability to pay bills using their remote control.

Identify A Vector Spotlight

Vector spotlights are rated up to 20 million candlepower.

Vector's reputation as a leading manufacturer of high-performance spotlights has earned them a loyal following over the years. Since Black and Decker's buyout of the business in 2006, Stanley Works takeover of Black and Decker in 2009 and the sale of Vector to Baccus Global in 2010, it's become more difficult to identify Vector spotlights. Some models didn't survive the changes in ownership and others that did have different branding. As of early 2011 some stores still sell Vectors with the old name, but others don't, so you need to know look them up with the new name.

Instructions

1. Check the name. Start looking by typing "Vector spotlight" into your favorite search engine and seeing what comes up. You might find vendors that are still selling spotlights under the old Vector name. You should also check local stores since it takes a while to sell off the old inventory after a name change. If you're looking for Vector's 1 million candlepower Inflator/Spotlight, Baccus Global is the new manufacturer and they sell it under the old Vector name.

2. Check the model number. Look for a "VEC" prefix in the model numbers of spotlights you're considering. Vector put the "VEC" prefix in their model numbers to identify their product line and when ownership passed to Black and Decker and later Baccus Global, they continued to use this prefix.

3. Visit the Baccus Global website and click on "Black & Decker." Move your mouse over the spotlight icon on the "Interactive Garage" screen to display a drop-down menu. The top three entries in this menu are Vector spotlights made by Baccus Global. (See References.) Click the one that interests you to display its product details in a new page. You'll notice that the model number begins with a "VEC" prefix. Look-up this model number in your favorite search engine to find out who has it.

Program A Converter Box Remote To Run A Vcr

Digital converter boxes are used to adapt a digital television signal to an analog television signal. This proves to be helpful when your television is an older analog set that isn't equipped to receive digital broadcasts. When using the converter box you can connect a VCR to it, giving you the ability to record the contents of a program onto a VHS tape. However, if you do not want to use two different remote controls you can program your converter box's remote to run the VCR.

Instructions

1. Ensure the VCR is connected to the converter box. You can either run a coaxial cable from the "Out" port of the converter box to the "In" port of the VCR or use RCA cables and connect them from the "Video Out" port of the converter box to the "Video In" port of the VCR.

2. Turn on the converter box, then turn on the VCR manually (by pressing the "Power" button on the VCR instead of the remote).

3. Look through the user manual that came with the converter box. Device codes are listed here. Look up the brand of VCR you are using.

4. Point the converter box's remote towards the VCR and push the "Code" button (the exact button may vary slightly depending on your converter box). Keep the button held down until the LED light on the remote stays light.

5. Punch in the device code for the VCR and press the "Code" button again (double check your manual to make sure this is a requirement). Push the "Power" button and wait to see if the VCR powers off. If it does the coding has been successful. If not you need to retry it with a different code. Usually multiple codes are given for the same brand of electronics.

Protect Yourself From Hightech Rfid Identity Theft

Kena Kai Datasafe® RFID-Blocking Wallet

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is an emerging location and identification technology that has many upsides, but some significant downsides as well. Though not quite in the mainstream at present, government and industry are working on numerous RFID projects that will likely come to fruition somewhere between the years 2013-2020. In this article, we'll take a look at how you can prevent high-tech identity thieves with laptops and RFID scanners from capturing your private information.

Instructions

1. RFID Defined. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology is based on tiny silicon RFID chips that in small numbers are already being inserted into product packaging, uniforms, and smart cards. The chips are passive, meaning they do not transmit data but rather must be scanned to retrieve data stored on the RFID chip. This wireless scanning makes location of products easy, and paying via these RFID chips is as easy as a wave of the hand.

2. RFID Vulnerability: Security. The downside to RFID technology comes in the form of personal security issues. With the right tools, it is easy for identity thieves to scan smart cards in briefcases, purses, and wallets. This is why so many privacy advocates are alarmed at the prospect of industry- and government-wide implementation of RFID technology. So if you have a smart card, passport, or other identifying information on your person, how do you protect yourself?

3. Protecting Your Personal Information. It may sound conspiratorial or paranoid, but protecting your personal information from identity thieves is very important. Just a person sitting on a park bench with a laptop watching passers-by can electronically scan and capture data from RFID devices. Beyond that, it's not difficult for the perpetrator to completely assume your identity and make charges on your RFID smart card. Because of this immediate need for increased security, some companies now sell RFID-blocking wallets that protect against unwanted electronic surveillance intrusions.

4. RFID-Blocking Wallets. Two substances block RFID signals: metal and water. Of course, metal is the more sensible choice and is often used in the form of aluminum foil to impede RFID signals. Some have made their own wallets out of duct tape and aluminum foil to block RFID signals; but most prefer the look and feel of a real (leather) wallet. Companies including Kena Kai, Travelon, and Mobile Edge all offer RFID-blocking wallets in a variety of traditional styles including some that will also shield your RFID passport.

Choose An Lcd Hdtv

Since most countries have switched over to digital television broadcasting, a growing number of consumers are deciding to upgrade their televisions to HDTV. Although there are several different types of HDTVs to select from, the most popular kind are LCDs.

There are many models of LCD televisions to select from. This can make choosing the right one an overwhelming task. Weighing the pros and cons will help you learn choose an LCD HDTV.

Instructions

Choose an LCD Television

1. Choose the screen size. There are many different LCD screen sizes available. While you may be tempted to purchase the largest available screen if your budget allows, that may not be the best choice for your home. If your screen is too large, you might see some pixelation (when you can see the tiny colored squares that make the image on your television) from where you sit while watching television. If it is too small, you might not enjoy the television experience. A general rule of thumb is to keep your viewing distances about three to four times the size of your television screen.

2. Choose the resolution. There are three types of resolution to select from: 780p, 1081i, and 1080p. Of these three, 1080p is the highest quality while 780p comes in second, because of the way these televisions display their images. You can save quite a bit if you purchase a 780p LCD television. In addition, many people say they can't tell the difference between 780p and 1080p.

3. Choose the mounting style. Because they are so light-weight and thin, there are several different mounting styles to select from with LCD televisions. You can simply set your LCD television on a television stand, or you can choose to mount it on the wall. You can also install LCDs on lifts or with swivel arms. So, make sure your LCD television has the proper mounting devices if you plan to do something other than put it on a stand.

4. Choose between HDTV or standard digital. While most LCDs are HDTVs, there are some that are not. So, if you want to be able to view high-definition programming, be sure to choose one that is an HDTV. Also, unless you want to purchase a separate HD antenna, don't buy an LCD that is "HD-Ready," as that means it can broadcast high-definition if you use the proper antenna.

5. Choose the right connectivity. If you plan to watch movies or play video games with your new LCD, you will need to have HDMI inputs. So, make certain you have enough inputs for all of the accessories you want to connect.

6. Read reviews and ask around. Talking to other people about their LCDs and reading reviews online is a great way to further narrow down your choices.

7. Go to the store and compare. When it comes down to it, the only way to really know which television offers the best picture is to go to the store and take a look. Be sure to play around with the settings and to set all of the televisions on the same settings in order to truly compare the different sets.

Copy Images To A Memory Card For A Digital Frame

Digital frames allow you to display a variety of different digital images in one frame. The amount of images usually is dependent upon the amount of memory space you have. These electronic frames will rotate, on schedule, each image that has been added to the frame's internal hard disk or a connected memory card. The type of memory card that is required for your digital frame varies. Some digital frames are compatible with microSD or SD cards.

Instructions

1. Insert the memory card into the computer's memory card slot. If the computer doesn't have a compatible memory card slot, plug in the USB cable of a memory card reader into the computer's USB port, then insert the memory card into the memory card reader's card slot.

2. Click "Open Folder to View Files" in the Windows AutoPlay screen. If no AutoPlay window opens, click on the desktop "Start" menu, then click on the "Computer" or "My Computer" folder. Inside that folder, click on the removable disk drive that represents the memory card.

3. Drag images saved on your computer and drop them into the removable disk folder.

4. Remove your memory card from the computer's or the memory card reader's slot when you have transferred all of your photos.

5. Insert the memory card into the digital frame's memory card slot. The location of the memory card slot varies per frame, but it is most likely on either the left or right side of the frame. The frame will read and display the images on your memory card.

Make A Dvd Laser Pen

Making a very powerful burning laser from an old DVD burner is easy. It will light matches, burn through cardboard and melt plastic (burning through it if allowed). The light is very intense.

Instructions

1. Use a pair of pliers to pull on the tip of a marker until the entire felt tube comes out. Rinse the marker until there is no more ink in it. Dry the marker inside and out. Use a small screwdriver to pop off the back end by inserting it into the marker and pushing the end cap until it pops off.

2. Open a sacrificial DVD burner. Do this by unscrewing every screw on the case that you can find. Do not forget to check for hidden screws under the stickers. Some cases will (rarely) require you to pry at the face plate of the DVD burner to remove it before the rest of the case will open.

3. Look in the open case where the DVD tray typically sits. There should be a clear, flat diode that is on a platform that can move to read/write on the DVD player. Remove the circuit that holds the diode, but not the diode itself. You may have to cut wires and undo screws to get at it. Strip it down until it is a flat mini-circuit board.

4. Get a sacrificial clothes iron. Clamp it to your workbench vice (unplugged) so that the flat, "hot" side faces upwards and is level. Secure it so that it does not wiggle around. Make sure that you are not standing close enough so that hot solder and parts do not run off onto you or your feet. Turn the iron on the lowest setting.

5. Get two pairs of forceps. Place the chip (circuit board) on the iron with the components on the top. Use one pair of forceps to hold the chip on the iron and the other to grasp the part(s) that you wish to remove from their solder. Raise the temperature in increments, and try again with the forceps to see if the solder has melted enough to remove the part(s). Make sure that the heat does not travel from the iron through the forceps, since metal likes to let heat dissipate through it quickly. Once the laser diode is removed and cooled, go to the next step.

6. Cut two wires so that one is 6 inches long and the other is 1 inch long. Strip two the wires up to 1 centimeter from both sides of each wire. Solder each of these two wires to two separate metal leads sticking out of the laser diode. Insert the diode (wires first) into the marker, and glue it in place so that the flat laser side is perpendicular to the cylinder and points straight out. Glue on the diode with cyanoacrylate (similar to Super Glue).

7. Cut a 5-inch square of aluminum coil. Use your forceps again to grab the wires from the still-open end. Hold the wires together and against the inside wall of the marker. Keep the longest wire sticking out of the marker. Wad up the aluminum foil into a ball that is slightly larger than the marker. Slip this ball into the marker so that it firmly contacts the exposed end of the shorter wire.

8. Aim the laser to a safe location and clamp it in place. A water-soaked rag will work of a little while, though the light will still burn through it. Strip a third wire on both ends that is 4 inches long. Cut a loop of resilient plastic from a disposable water bottle and make a loop that is as wide as the marker. Tape the loop.

9. Use more cyanoacrylate glue to glue one wire into the inside of the loop, without getting the glue on the exposed wire. Make sure that the wire goes into the loop at an angle. Glue the outside of the loop onto the marker with the wire on the lower inside of the loop. Glue the other wire in a similar way but at a right angle to the first wire, right above the first so that if you squeeze the loop, the wires touch to complete the circuit (a simple switch).

10. Run the free end of the third wire to the flat side of a AA battery. Tape the wire on and slip this into the marker. Cut a notch into the end cap for the wire to sit in and then put the cap back on (if you are confident that you can pull the end cap off again).

Photography Art Projects

There are several options when it comes to photography art.

With the advent of the digital camera, photography has evolved not only as a job for the professional photographer but also as a pastime for amateurs. Although some photographers still prefer the traditional feel and integrity of taking photographs using film cameras, other photographers favor the convenience and updated technology that a digital camera provides. As the saying goes, a picture tells a thousand words and photography enables the development of creative and educational art projects.

Alphabet Photo Gallery

Various types of alphabet photo galleries have been created by famous photographers that can serve as your inspiration or model in creating your own alphabet photo gallery. Some designs feature the alphabet in illuminated writing or architectural structures, while others present a collection of images that form or illustrate the letters of the alphabet. You can also select a specific theme or material then design them to produce an alphabet gallery. Examples of these are alphabet galleries using human formations, plant parts, human hair and creative cutouts.

Photo Collage

A photo collage is another interesting photography art project. You can do these manually using pictures that are already printed out, or you can form the collage first from digital photos in your computer before printing the final design. There are various applications, such as Google's Picasa or Microsoft Publisher, which can be used to easily design and lay out the collage. A photo collage can be created as a home decor, a personalized gift or a school project. Depending on the specific purpose, some ideas that you can start with are family pictures that you can lay out to form a house, baby photos that you can cut and design to mold a cartoon character or images of exotic plants you can collect and arrange in a tree pattern.

Visual Composition

Some ideas are conveyed more easily using illustrations. Through a visual composition, you can tell your story in a more dramatic manner. This art project does not only apply to photography classes but also to lessons in journalism, English, history and other forms of art. To put a little variation on English writing compositions or history research assignments, related images can be added to the traditional articles or essays. An English essay about your return to your hometown, a news feature about a political upheaval or a historical account of a national hero's life are some of the projects that can be turned into a visual composition.

Look-and-See Books

For photography students or enthusiasts, "look-and-see" books are used to document the different images they have taken and organize them depending on styles, contents or themes. These can be used as personal references, and those that are skillfully and creatively designed can be employed as library resources. Look-and-see books also can be adapted as photography art projects in the study of applied arts such as architecture, interior design and fashion design.

The Best Way To Scan Pictures

Print photographs are scanned for use on websites and in presentations.

Though digital cameras are commonplace, many people still have old print photos stored in boxes, albums and picture frames. Scanners easily convert print photographs and fragile documents into digital files that are stored on DVDs, USB flash drives or CDs. The converted images can then be uploaded onto websites, emailed to family and friends, inserted into presentations or imprinted on t-shirts.

Instructions

1. Purchase a photo scanning system based on your individual needs. Consider factors such as the number of photos you need to scan when choosing a machine. Some scanners can scan multiple photos at once.

2. Clean your Kodak slides before loading them on the scanner. Remove any dust and other dirt that has accumulated on the photos, as this can affect the quality of the digital image. Use a soft cloth, preferably one that is made of anti-static microfiber material. Never use water or a water-based solution to clean your photos. Clean the slides with a film cleaner used specifically for photographs.

3. Place the photo face down on the flatbed or in the scanner slide mount. The top of the slide should be positioned towards the input tray. Center your slides so the edges are aligned in the tray or on the scanner.

4. Select the scan option and use the preview feature to select the images that you want to upload to your computer. Use the system's editing tools to tweak colors, enhance detail, crop, correct red-eye and check for any marks that may have been transferred during the scan.

5. Save the image as a TIFF or GIF file if you are planning to edit it in an image editing software program such as Photoshop. TIFF files are much larger than JPEGs, but they include more detail in the image. Convert the image to a JPEG if you plan to use it on a website or to print four-inch by six-inch photographs. Keep the image in a TIFF file to print larger, higher quality photographs.

Calibrate A Photo Scanner

It's worth cleaning the photo scanner before recalibrating it if you experience image-quality problems. A wipe of the glass with some isopropyl alcohol will fix many photo scanning issues. If the scanner is new, you should check that there isn't a protective shipping sheet covering the glass that could be causing image problems. If you still have problems such as blank or black scans, recalibrate the photo scanner, which can be completed in a few steps.

Instructions

1. Place a blank piece of paper on the glass.

2. Open the Windows Control Panel and double-click on "Scanners & Cameras." Different operating systems have different ways of getting to this area. Some versions of Windows will ask you to click on "Hardware and Sound" or "Printers and other Hardware" first. Click on the "Advanced" tab and click the "Calibrate" button. You may have to also press "OK."

3. Remove the blank piece of paper and place the calibration sheet of paper that came with the scanner.

4. Click the "Calibrate" button gain. You may have to also press "OK." Allow the second calibration to take place and try the photo scanner again.

Light Meters Explained

Light Meters Explained

Photography is about more than just pointing a camera at an object and pushing the shutter button. In order to take quality photographs with proper exposure and tonal values, an understanding of how light striking the subject influences the final product is needed. By manipulating settings on a camera using the information received from a light meter, photos can gain the correct image exposure. There are a selection of different light meters and specialty types available.

Light Meter

Light meters are pieces of equipment used in photography to aid image exposure accuracy. They help photographers or camera operators set the camera to generate the best image by measuring both intensity and reflection of available light. Light meters come in stand-alone hand-held units, and built-in camera forms. Besides photography, they are also used in cinematography for scene lighting, greenhouses for plant lighting and in the home for automatic or programmed lighting.

Reflected Meters

Reflected light meters measure the light reflected by the image to be photographed, and are the type used as all in-camera meters. Reflected light meters are designed to show the calculated exposure for images with mid-range colors and standard highlights. Inaccuracies are common in a reflected light meter, as when taking a reading of a bright scene, the meter attempts to compensate and average the difference in reflectance on a number of objects leading to poor exposure.

Incident Light Meters

Incident light meters, as most hand-held units are, measure the amount of light falling on the subject to avoid exposure inaccuracies. This is accomplished by using an integrating sphere on top of the light sensor. The targeted incident light reading is thus less likely to lead to incorrect exposures for subjects in bright surroundings. The unit creates these meter readings by placing the meter near the subject and then pointing it back toward the camera.

Specialty Meters

There are two other types of specialized light meters used in photography. Flash meters are used with flash photography equipment to complement and adjust for correct exposure in photography like portraiture. Color meters can also be used to improve quality when increased color depth is desired in an image.

Conclusion

In order to take a good picture, the right equipment is always necessary. A light meter, properly used to calculate exposure settings, will make all the difference in achieving a quality image.

Pictbridge Camera

PictBridge gives you a way to bypass the PC when printing images.

A digital camera or camera-equipped mobile phone which features PictBridge technology allows you to connect the device directly to a printer for the purpose of printing pictures. This connection is made through a Universal Serial Bus cable and requires both devices to feature a USB port and to be PictBridge-capable. You can determine if the devices are PictBridge capable by locating the standard's logo on both devices.

Technology

PictBridge technology is a standardized product of the Camera and Imaging Products Association and came about as a result of the rapid increase of digital camera production. Because of the rapid growth of digital cameras, it is easier to handle images as digital data. Prior to PictBridge, a personal computer acted as a facilitator between a camera and a printer and required the presence of a software application to provide printing functionality. PictBridge technology was officially announced in 2002 as a joint venture between six digital camera manufacturers, including Canon, Fuji, Sony and Olympus.

Using PictBridge

Once a PictBridge-equipped cameras or camera phone is connected to a PictBridge-compliant printer, print options appear on the camera's display screen. Using the camera's print menu, you can control the size, media type and layout of the printouts you are producing. PictBridge gives you the option of printing single or multiple images or even all images contained on a camera's memory card. Large-scale prints, such as 13 by 19 inches, require the printer to have a memory card installed, if it is so equipped.

USB

At the time of publication, USB ports and cables are available in standard-, mini- and micro-sized versions, each of which may come with PictBridge cameras and printers. While USB cables and ports are used primarily for transferring data from one device to another, such as with PictBridge, they are also capable of transferring power. This feature enables the smaller device to charge while the connection is intact. Currently, USB version 2.0 is the most used USB technology and delivers transfer speeds of up to 40 times faster than those achieved by USB version 1.1. Contrary to what its name implies, "full speed" USB 1.1 connections are actually slow speed, while USB 2.0's "high speed" designation is just what the name implies.

Wireless Printing

While PictBridge technology gives digital camera users the option of printing using a wired connection, other companies, such as Apple, have introduced a wireless method for printing from an iPhone 4 that does not require a PC connection. Dubbed AirPrint, this feature allows you to wirelessly print from an iPhone 4 on an AirPrint-equipped printer. Currently, Hewlett-Packard is the only company that produces printers with the AirPrint feature.

Kodak M883 Charging Issues

The Kodak M883's battery can be charged in more than one way.

The Kodak M883 is an 8-megapixel digital camera under the company's EasyShare line. Users of the M883 can either recharge the camera by connecting it to a computer's USB port or by using an AV cable plugged into an outlet. The M883 can take up to 10 hours for a full charge and this can be mistaken for a worn battery. Shorten these recharging periods by using the correct software and checking that the battery is in good condition.

Charging with USB cable

Insert the corresponding ends of a USB cable into a computer and the camera. Try inserting the USB cable into a different USB port on a computer to ensure that a previous USB slot isn't faulty or the camera's software was not installed. The camera should be running a firmware version of 1.02 or higher. On the camera, press "Menu." Use the right arrow to click the "Setup" tab or the down arrow to highlight "About" and press "OK." If you receive notice that the camera is running an older version of firmware than 1.02, you will need to download updated software.

Ensure the computer is switched on and is not in sleep mode. If you are using a laptop, make sure the power cable is plugged in to prevent it from running out of battery and preventing the camera from charging.

Charging with an AC Adaptor

Turn the camera off before charging. All cables should connected correctly and the power socket should be turned on. Allow the green light to turn off before disconnecting. This means the camera is fully charged.

Battery Maintenance

Extract the battery and wipe the metal sensors with a dry cloth to remove any dirt or residue. Also clean the inside of the camera's battery slot.

Use A Negativepositive Microfilm Reader

Use a film reader to view microform easily.

Most academic libraries offer electronic archives of journals and newspapers. Unfortunately, these archives don't always include older issues or illustrations and advertisements that appeared in the original publication. When students need to research non-text content or view an older article, microfilm may be the only option. Many libraries continue to offer microfilm reels as well as microfilm reading stations for convenient viewing.

Instructions

1. Turn the microfilm reader on by pressing the power switch.

2. Raise the glass plate below the reader's monitor by pulling it out or pushing a film gate switch.

3. Place the film reel onto the left shaft. You should hear a clicking sound.

4. Working left to right, thread the film under the first guider roller, over the second roller, over the lower glass flat, over the third roller, under the fourth roller and through the slot in the right take-up reel.

5. Turn the take-up reel counter-clockwise manually to wind the film around it.

6. Press or turn the fast forward/rewind controls to scroll through your film. You should see the film display on your monitor.

7. Adjust the image orientation and quality with focus and rotate controls and the high/low light switch. Most microfilm will display as black text over a white background. If your film displays as white text over a black background, it is probably a negative. In this case, click the "film type" icon on your film reader to switch to a positive display for easier reading.

8. Press the rewind control when you are done using the microfilm to roll it back up.

Hook Up An Equalizer In A Car Stereo

Want to get the absolute best possible sound in your car? Then consider adding an equalizer to your system. An equalizer isn't right for every system. You'll need to send the output of the equalizer to outboard amplifiers, so it's not an item you can add onto a factory system. But in the right circumstances, an equalizer will allow you to adjust specific frequency bands exactly, so that you can dial in exactly what you want to hear coming through your speakers.

Instructions

1. Hook up an RCA patch cable between the output of your car's stereo receiver and the graphic equalizer's RCA inputs. Use stereo cables with male RCA connectors.

2. Connect the equalizer's outputs to the RCA inputs of your amplifiers. How many cables you need will depend upon the number of amps in the system. In most cases, you'll need two to three to connect the equalizer to the inputs of your amplifiers.

3. Hook up the equalizer to 12-volt power. Use the same power connections you used to connect your amplifiers and receiver. The equalizer's yellow wire should be connected to a constant power source, one that is not switched off with the ignition, and the red wire (not always present) to a switched 12-volt power source.

4. Splice the wires by stripping the insulation off the end of each wire and then soldering or crimping them together.

5. Connect the equalizer's blue "turn-on" lead to the receiver's blue wire. This turns the equalizer on when the receiver is powered up.

Shortwave Receiver Work

How Does Radio Work?

Radio works by transmitting radio waves, a form of electromagnetic radiation with a frequency below visible light, to carry information. Information is stored in radio waves by modulating one or more of their properties. Examples of radio wave properties are amplitude (magnitude of oscillation) and frequency (repetition within a set period of time). When the radio waves pass through an electrical conductor, the modulations can be detected by means of the electrical current they create. This current can then be read and turned into usable information, such as voice transmissions.

What is Shortwave?

Shortwave radio operates between 3 MHz and 30 MHz. The name originates in from the early radio era, as these are wavelengths that are shorter than the ones that were previously in use at that time. Another name for shortwave is high frequency, or HF. Short wavelengths always mean higher frequencies. Because of this characteristic, the radio waves bounce off the upper atmosphere rather than shoot out into space. In theory, a shortwave broadcast could reach anywhere on Earth.

Pros and Cons

Shortwave radio transmissions have much greater potential range than longwave transmissions. Longwave transmissions are the basis for your local AM radio stations; shortwave transmissions are for regional or even international audiences. However, they are also much more prone to interference from overcrowding on a radio band, or from atmospheric disturbances. Furthermore, sound quality on shortwave bands are typically lower.

Take Hair Photos With A Digital Camera

Shoot the hair in different lights.

Taking hair photos with a digital camera requires you to showcase the hair, not the face of the subject. Reasons for hair photography include a bride selecting the correct hairstyle for a wedding veil, documenting hair loss or growth in a cancer patient receiving chemotherapy in a photo essay, or to showcase new manufactured products for the hair. As the reasons vary, so will the shooting angles and focus of the camera.

Instructions

1. Set up a solid background canvas to focus the eye on the hair. Use a light colored canvas for dark brown hair or black, while a dark navy blue or black backdrop works well for blondes. Examine the hairstyle for intricate sections to photograph, such as the design of a corn-roll or the curls of an elaborate up-do.

2. Take the pictures. Move around the person and photograph the hair style at different angles. Shoot from above the hair styles by using a ladder and below the style by kneeling down. Vary your angle shots as you shoot different sections of the hairstyle.

3. Zoom in or use your macro setting for extreme close-up shots. Show the individual hair follicles as you document tiny stubble growth. Take a closeup to emphasize hair loss and growing hairless patches. Show hair damage to the hair shaft by highlighting split ends.

4. Photograph the steps of the hair technique as you shoot the hair divided into sections before the application of the hair dye. Take a shot of the brush or applicator bottle dispensing dye to the roots. Illustrate each step of making a braid before an overall composition of the final braid design.

5. Showcase a hair item in the hair. Take shots of a barrette, flowered comb or bridal veil. Move the item as you display it within various hairstyles. Zoom in to showcase the details of flowers or the sheerness of a veil against the color and texture of the hair. Vary the angles of the shot as you zoom out to shoot the impact of the item in the hair.

Sync Media On Motorola Droid

The Motorola Droid is a smartphone that uses the Google Android operating system. Google Android offers a customizable interface and built-in media player that supports most commonly used media formats such as MP3, AAC, MP4 and many others. Because the Droid includes very little internal memory, a microSD card is required when synchronizing media to the device. MicroSD cards up to 32 GB are supported. Once the microSD card is inserted, the supplied USB cable is used to sync media from your computer to the Droid.

Instructions

1. Use your thumb to remove the battery cover and access the microSD bay. Insert the microSD card into the microSD card slot with the gold connectors facing downward. Reattach the battery cover.

2. Connect the Droid to the computer using the USB cable. The USB connection window will open on the phone. Touch "USB Connected." Touch "Mount." The AutoPlay window will open.

3. Double-click "Open Folder to View Files." A folder containing all the files on the Droid and the microSD card will open. Double-click the folder that corresponds with the type of media you want to put on the phone. For example, if you want to add pictures, double-click the "Pictures" folder.

4. Drag-and-drop the files you want on the phone into their appropriate folders. When you're finished, tap "Turn off USB Storage" on the phone.

Buy Photo Lighting Tent

Lighting tents provide a reflective surface that surrounds the object you are photographing, eliminating shadows and enhancing details. Whether you're a professional food photographer or you're taking photographs of items for an online auction, you can benefit from a lighting tent.

Instructions

1. Choose a portable lighting tent if you will be transporting it to different locations. Collapsible models, made of lightweight materials, are available, allowing the photographer to shoot on location while using his own equipment.

2. Look for light-permeable sides to allow soft directional lighting from an outside source. Some items require more illumination on one side of the object. With light-permeable fabric, you can adjust your light source while retaining light diffusion.

3. Pick cool lights to prevent food products or fresh flowers from wilting. The heat from incandescent or halogen lights can turn your dish of ice cream into a milkshake within minutes.

4. Purchase a lighting tent with alternate-colored backdrops if you will be editing the item in a graphics' program. Just as television weather forecasters film before a green or blue screen in order to overlay their image on a weather map, so does an item photographed in front of a similarly-colored background allow the photographer to easily move it into another scene without edge distortion.

5. Consider making your own low-cost lighting tent if you need one in a pinch, By painting the inside of a sturdy cardboard box white, cutting out large holes on each side and covering them with white fabric, you can make an inexpensive model quickly. (See Resources)
