Scan Super 8 Film


Sophisticated machines for digitizing Super 8 film, called telecine machines, can cost up to $2,000. But you can use a conventional scanner for similar, though slightly lower quality, results. You can turn your scanned images into a movie file or use them in any kind of digital project. Scanning film can be a slow process, as you must typically scan only a few frames at a time.


Instructions


1. Connect the scanner to the computer. Open the image-scanning program on your computer. Most scanners come with a CD that includes this software. If your computer lacks the software, you can download the appropriate software from your scanner manufacturer's website.


2. Open the cover of the scanner. Place a strip of film in the scanner vertically. Place the beginning of the film near the front of the scanner with the "front" side down. Keep the film in a straight line, allowing it to trail off the end of the scanner. When looking at the film on the scanner, you should see an inverted image.


3. Close the lid on the scanner gently. Press the "scan" button.


4. Once the image uploads, move the piece of film on the scanner so that the top frame trails slightly from the top of the scanner. You should be scanning the frames directly below the frames you just scanned. Repeat this process until you have scanned all of the film.

Though many cellular phones and other mobile devices allow limited Internet access while on the go, the Palm Treo 680 smartphone takes mobile connectivity to a whole new level. Using the Treo 680 you can browse the Internet, check your email and even pay bills online without needing access to a computer. Follow these steps to see how easy it is to access the Internet from anywhere using your Palm Treo 680.


Instructions


1. Turn on your Palm Treo 680 smartphone. You should make sure that the battery is charged, as browsing the Internet can use a significantly larger amount of power than having your phone in standby mode or sending text or video messages.


2. Access the main menu on your phone. You will see a number of icons on the screen, each of which is labeled. Scroll through the menu until you see an icon of a sphere with an arrow wrapped around it, labeled Web. Push this icon to access the Treo 680's Blazer web browser (remember, the screen on the Treo 680 is touch-sensitive so that you can literally press the icon with your stylus to select it).


3. Once the Treo connects to the Internet with the Blazer web browser, you can select the destination bar at the top of the screen and type in the web address that you want to go to using the full alpha-numeric keypad on your phone. You should be able to access just about any website on the Treo 680 that you would be able to access from a home computer, though some websites may require plugins which aren't pre-installed in the Blazer browser.


4. In addition to being able to access webmail applications using the Treo 680's Blazer web browser, you can also configure your Treo to allow you to check your email without the need for webmail. Set this up using the email option on your Treo 680 just like you would any pop3 email program such as Outlook or Thunderbird.

Tint Skylights

A skylight fills a room with sunlight, which you can dim by adding a window tint to the surface of the glass.


A skylight is a tubular device beginning at the roof and ending on the ceiling of a room with a square or circle of glass that directs diffused light into the room to brighten its appearance. Skylights can provide a wonderful addition to a room, but you may also find once you've installed a skylight that the room itself has become overly bright. An easy resolution to this problem involves adding a tint to the glass of the skylight, allowing you to control the amount of light it allows into the room.


Instructions


1. Clean the surface of the skylight with glass cleaner and paper towels. Remove all fingerprints, dirt and smudging.


2. Clean the window with the soap and water to remove all chemical substances.


3. Peel off the back of the window tint, exposing one sticky side. Apply the sticky side to the surface of the glass.


4. Smooth out all bubbles with your squeegee, leaving the tint lying flat over the glass.


5. Trim any excess tint from the edges of the skylight with your razor blade.

How The Flash Diffuser On A Camera Works

Process


Flash diffusion works by scattering direct, or columnar, light to create a softer light with fewer sharp edges on shadows. In photography, diffuse light is preferable to direct light because it creates fewer shadows in facial wrinkles and folds and creates softer, more pleasing shadows.


Translucent Diffusers


The most common way of diffusing camera flash is to place one of several devices between the light source and the photographic subject. Although these materials are always translucent, they vary in how they work.


The most common flash diffuser is a light translucent cover with radial lines. As the photons from the flash tube pass through these lines, they are scattered in different directions. This scattering effect is the diffusion. All on-camera flashes and many hot shoe flashes have this type of diffusion by design. Some cameras and hot shoe flashes have an additional radial diffusion panel that can be either placed on the flash or flipped down over the flash.


Translucent flash covers, with a milky appearance, can be placed over the existing flash for more diffusion. These can be either plastic caps that fit over the front of the flash or cloth boxes that mount over the entire flash unit. The milky nature of the material scatters the photons far more than radial flash diffusers. These types of diffusers come at a cost in effective flash distance. The extreme scattering of photons means that less light falls directly on the subject, reducing the distance at which the flash is effective.


In some cases, simple household materials can be used as a flash diffuser. In a pinch, photographers have held or taped napkins, plastic, paper or tissues to the front of the flash to create a homemade diffuser.


Reflective Diffusers


Reflective flash diffusers scatter the light from the flash by using the reflective properties of certain materials. Some on flash cloth diffusers also use reflection to further soften the light. In these devices, the flash is pointed upward at a reflective surface that then transfers the light outward through the milky white cloth.


Another common flash diffuser is a reflective photographic umbrella. The diffusion is a result of the light bouncing off the umbrellas reflective surface and scattering the light in different directions.


Some hot shoe flashes allow the flash to use low ceilings and walls as reflective diffusers. The hot shoe flash can be tilted upward to reflect, or bounce, the light off light colored walls and ceilings. The result is similar to using a very large, diffuse light source.

Motorola Minitor Ii Instructions

Motorola Minitor pagers are a type of pager carried by firemen and rescue personnel to alert them of emergency situations. The Motorola Minitor II is a second-generation Motorola alert pager, and though they continue to be used by emergency personnel across the country, the Motorola Minitor II has been discontinued in favor of more recent models such as the Motorola Minitor III, IV and V.


Battery Information


The Motorola Minitor II is powered by two alkaline or rechargeable AAA batteries. If using rechargeable AAA batteries to power your Motorola Minitor II, be sure that the batteries are fully charged before installing them in the alert monitor. To install the batteries, slide over the latch on the battery door and open it. Insert the batteries into the Motorola Minitor II, making sure to observe the proper polarity. When the batteries in your Motorola Minitor II are low, a red LED indicator light will switch on and a pulse tone will sound. If the batteries are installed improperly, or old batteries are used, the Motorola Minitor II may not function correctly.


Power Switch/Volume Control


The dial on the left hand side of the Motorola Minitor II is called the "Power Switch/Volume Control." When the "Power Switch/Volume Control" dial is turned clockwise, the device is powered on. After that, you can continue to turn the dial clockwise to increase the volume, or turn it counterclockwise to decrease the volume. To turn the Motorola Minitor II off, rotate the dial counterclockwise until the device shuts off.


Function Dial


The dial on the right hand side of your Motorola Minitor II is the "Function" dial. Depending on when your Motorola Minitor II was purchased, you may have as few as two function modes or as many as four. Each function mode represents a different communications channel. You can change the function mode of the Motorola Minitor II by turning the function switch. Once the device has been set to a particular mode or channel, you will be able to hear all the voice communications from that channel until a new channel is selected. After you have received a message, press the "Reset" button on the Motorola Minitor II to put the device in standby mode.


Audio/Visual Indicator Lights


The two small indicator lights located between the dials of your Motorola Minitor II are the audio/visual alert indicator lights. When the Motorola Minitor II is first powered on, both the red and amber indicator lights turn on until the device's internal start-up is complete. After that, the red indicator light will flash whenever there is an incoming message. When the function switch is set to vibrate, the red LED light will flash to indicate a low battery.


Care and Maintenance


Proper care and maintenance will help keep your Motorola Minitor II functioning at its best. This includes keeping the Motorola Minitor II clean and away from excess moisture. If the device needs to be cleaned, wipe it with a soft cloth that has been dampened in a solution of mild soap and water. Should the device come into contact with direct moisture, remove the batteries and dry the Motorola Minitor II with a soft cloth before replacing the batteries.

Use The Canon 24mm Tilt Shift

The Canon 24mm Tilt/Shift lens can be used for architectural photography.


The Canon 24mm Tilt/Shift lens is a speciality lens traditionally used in architectural, product and landscape photography. The lens will attach to auto focus cameras, but is not an auto focus lens. In addition to focusing there are two other variables you can adjust. Shift movements let the photographer move the center of the lens relative to the sensor or film plane. Tilt movements allow you to tilt the focus plane to better suit your requirements relative to the subject you are focusing.


Instructions


1. Compose your picture normally. Make sure the tilt and shift adjustments are set to zero. Using a tripod, compose your photo as you would with any other type of lens. Focus the lens until you are satisfied the subject is in correct focus.


2. Apply tilt or shift adjustments. Loosen the tightening knobs on the lens and gently adjust the lens to match your shooting requirements. This is a trial and error approach, and should be done in sequential steps. If you are adjusting the tilt for focusing effect, adjust the tilt. Tighten the knob, re-adjust your focus, look through the view finder and take a sample picture.


3. Review your test image either by zooming in on the review screen, or by loading the test image onto your computer and inspect. Adjust the lens settings and focusing point and take another test picture. Once you are satisfied with all the adjustments and settings, take your final picture.

Make A Homemade Laser Pointer

Laser pointers may be inexpensive to buy, but there's fun in making your own. A homemade laser pointer will work as well as one from a store and give you a sense of accomplishment every time you see the laser beam. The process of making a homemade laser is not complicated and just requires buying a laser module and an LED flashlight.


Instructions


1. Put a towel down on a table.


Remove the battery cap and batteries from the LED flashlight. Put the battery cap and batteries down on the towel.


2. Unscrew the reflector from the front of the LED flashlight. Remove the plastic lens inside of the reflector and discard it. Put the reflector down on the cloth.


3. Pull out the LED bulb from the LED flashlight using the needle nosed pliers. Discard the bulb. Place the LED flashlight down on the cloth.


4. Twist the AixiZ laser housing between your hands to separate the front and back casings from each other. Discard the front casing of the AixiZ laser housing.


5. Heat up the soldering iron. Take the back section of the AixiZ laser housing that has the exposed laser diode now showing and place it down on the towel.


Solder a conductive pin each to the positive and to the negative contacts on the body of the laser diode. Let the solder cool.


6. Insert the back half of the AixiZ laser housing, conductive pins first, into the LED flashlight. Apply a thin layer of bonding glue to hold the AixiZ laser housing to the inside of the LED flashlight. Let the bonding glue dry.


7. Screw the reflector back onto the LED flashlight. Put the batteries back into the LED flashlight and screw on the battery cap.


Aim the LED flashlight that has now been turned into a homemade laser pointer at a wall across the street. Press the button to project the laser light onto the wall.

NiMH batteries are popular with digital camera users.


The length of time an NiMH battery will hold its charge depends on several factors. But there are a few guidelines that can help you determine how long you can expect your batteries to last.


Function


Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries are used to power devices ranging from electric cars to cellular phones and digital cameras. They are popular batteries because they function sealed -- within a casing, which minimized leaks -- and can endure through high-power loads.


Rate of Discharge


According to CalRecycle, a typical NiMH battery will lose approximately 4 percent of its charge per day if left at rest -- up to an average maximum of about 30 percent per month. Discharge rates are higher in warm temperatures. Discharging occurs at a much faster rate if the batteries are being used.


Time Frame


Most consumer NiMH batteries are measured in mili-amp hours (mAh). Not all NiMH batteries are rated for the same mAh. An average AAA NiMH battery can last for about 1000 mAh. But an average AA NiMH battery can last up to 2700 mAh. One of the benefits of NiMH batteries is that they maintain their strength over their lifespan, meaning that a NiMH battery will discharge and perform similarly when new and when it's approaching the end of its lifespan.

Load A Podcast Onto An Ipod

Once you load a podcast onto an iPod, you can listen to your favorite Web episodes and radio shows on the go. Loading podcasts to your iPod is about the same as loading songs onto your iPod.


Instructions


1. Open iTunes. Now, find a podcast. You can buy podcasts from the iTunes store (click the store icon on the "Source list" on the left) or find them on the Web.


2. Subscribe to a podcast. Podcasts appear in your library automatically when you purchase them.


3. Connect your iPod. Use your USB cable or iPod dock to connect your iPod. Wait for the icon to appear on the "Source list."


4. Open your iPod settings. You can do this by clicking your iPod icon. Click the "Podcasts" tab.


5. Select "Sync...podcasts episodes." Select "Podcasts to Update." Or choose "Select All."


6. Click "Apply." Your podcasts should load each time you sync your iPod.


7. Sync your iPod. Your iPod will update automatically each time you connect it, or you can choose to update it from the "File" menu.

Astrophotography For Beginners

Take close-ups of the moon and stars.


Astrophotography is the art of taking clear, close pictures of celestial bodies. This can range from photos of the moon to detailed panoramas of stars moving across the sky. It can be difficult to understand astrophotography without help, but fortunately, the basics are easily understood and beginners can quickly move to more advanced photos.


Types of Astrophotographs


There are three main kinds of astrophotographs. Scenic photography consists of wide shots of the night sky, such as images of the moon or the Aurora Borealis. Planetary photography uses refractors to focus the light of a specific planet to create specific images of it. Deep sky photography combines cameras with long exposures and telescopes to pick out certain elements of the night sky and bring them out in high resolution images. What kind of photography you want to do will determine what equipment you purchase.


Types of Cameras


There are several kinds of cameras suitable for astrophotography. Digital snapshot cameras (DSC) are small, fixed-lens cameras. Digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras are the more advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses. Webcams are small cameras popular with planetary photography. If you already have a camera, begin with that camera. As you shoot photographs, ask yourself what you'd like to do and look at what you will need to achieve the specific effect that you want.


Telescopes, Refractors, and Other Equipment


Refractors use the principles of light to gather light from a source and focus it into a smaller area. They are commonly used with planetary photography to gather the light from a planet in order to get more detailed images of that planet. Telescopes are generally used with DSLRs in concert with, or in place of, their normal lens. Generally, a specialized mount for the telescope, called a barn-door mount, is needed. This can be purchased or even built.


Focusing


It is very important that the camera you use has an "infinite" focus and a manual focus. This means that everything in the image, no matter how distant it is, will be in focus. Often, auto-focus is not useful as the camera will pop in and out of focus as you adjust the image, and it tries to understand what you want in focus. Disabling this feature and manually focusing it to infinite will make your first images clearer and easier to shoot.


Exposure


Exposure is a key element of catching good shots. Exposure refers to the length of the time the film or sensor is exposed to light. The longer an exposure your camera will allow, the more detailed and complex the shots you can record, and the more artistic you can be with your astrophotography. For example, a long exposure on a camera performed overnight will show the direction of the stars crossing the sky, called a star-trail photograph.

Features


For those of us who are "directionally-impaired", a GPS device can go a long way towards simplifying everyday life. Also known as a "global positioning system", this technology is now included within a number of newer model cars. This is made possible through a receiver antenna on a car that communicates with satellites in space. Its main purpose is to let you know where you are, and get to your destination.


In addition to providing directions, GPS locators track vehicle mileage and speed, keep a record of your driving activity and track distance traveled. The more sophisticated devices can alert you when your car is stolen, and even let you know when your speeding. Car manufacturers that include this technology in their vehicles are Ford, BMW, General Motors and Lexus.


Function


Global Positioning Systems work off of a network of satellites that orbit the earth on a continual basis. The satellites act as locator devices that pass information back and forth with a car's antenna. Whenever a driver activates her GPS device, three satellites work together to locate the car using signals meant to narrow down the area and location. A fourth satellite analyzes the data generated from the other three to pinpoint a car's exact location.


The mapping interface inside the car is generated by information received from the satellites. Based on longitude and latitude calculations, the location of the car is indicated by an arrow-shaped icon on the console screen. The information that goes into the map is compiled by specialty map-making companies. GPS manufacturers purchase these map databases for inclusion in their navigational systems.


Differential GPS


Most GPS devices have a touch-screen display where the driver enters in his desired destination. The better the system, the more user-friendly this display will be. The display maps are based on real-word surveying, and data compiled from government sources with satellite imagery. When first using the system, users have to program the system for use with their vehicle. Once set-up, just enter a destination address on a touch screen using an onscreen keyboard.


The system relays direction information through a built-in speaker console as you drive. This voice automated feature can be turned on or off at your discretion. The map display can be set up to show close-up diagrams of each intersection as you progress towards your destination. Arrows on the diagram indicate which direction to turn. The more sophisticated systems display city attractions like hotels and restaurants, as well as provide alternate routes to destinations.

Remove A Car Radio From A Mazda Protege

The Mazda Protege was a compact sedan built under varying nameplates by Mazda from the mid-1960s to the early 2000s. It was marketed in the United States as what we know as the Mazda Protege from the early 1990s until 2003. Removing the car radio is a necessary first step to replacing the radio or upgrading the radio to an aftermarket model.


Instructions


1. Pry off two small rectangular covers on either side of the factory radio with your screwdriver. These covers will reveal the slots for the insertion of the DIN tools, which disengage the radio from its mount.


2. Slide the DIN tools into the openings on either side of the radio. When they're fully inserted, push the tools outward slightly and then pull toward you. The radio will disengage and slide out as you pull it.


3. When the radio is free from the dash, unplug the two connectors on the back. One is the electrical and speaker wiring, the other the antenna plug.

Program A Uniden Police Scanner

Public safety groups, including police, use a collection of frequencies that are grouped together in "systems."


Although termed "Police Scanners," Uniden scanners can pick up many different types of public safety radio communications, including fire, medics, road workers and more. Many public safety groups, including the police, use their own ranges of frequencies that are grouped together in "systems." Conventional and other systems can be programmed into Uniden scanners. Programming a Uniden Police Scanner can be accomplished by following just a few steps.


Instructions


1. Enter the Uniden scanner's Program System menu and choose "New System." The scanner will ask you for the type of system. For example, choose "Conventional." Confirm by tapping "Yes." The scanner will create a default name for the system.


2. From the Program System menu, choose the System you created in the previous step, then, from the "Edit Group" menu, choose "New Group." The scanner will create a Channel Group. On a Conventional System you need at least one Channel Group, but can have more.


3. From the "Edit Group" menu, choose the Channel Group that you created in the earlier step and choose "New Channel," then enter the frequency in MHz. This will create a channel (frequency) in the group; you need at least one. The Uniden Police Scanner will be programmed with the first frequency.


4. Continue to enter frequencies in MHz using the same procedure as in the previous steps. Remember that the frequencies are entered in the specific Channel Groups. Make specific system-recommended changes to tone coding, offsets and other optional attributes by choosing "Edit Frequency."

How Do Vcrs Work

Cassettes


A VHS cassette works according to the same principles as an audio cassette. It contains a spool of magnetic tape upon which the film has been encoded. The spool is threaded between two reels on the inside of the tape, protected by a plastic outer shell. The tape runs from one spool across the front of the VHS tape and onto the other spool, guided by rollers to keep it on track. A flexible plastic door covers the spools when the cassette isn't in a VCR to keep the tape from being damaged. In addition to the film, the tape also contains data on the play speed: SP, LP or EP, depending on the speed the original recording was made.


VCR


A VCR is designed to read the data on a VHS tape and translate it for playback on a television. A drum inside the VCR contains two recording heads, which perform this duty. When a tape is placed in a VCR, the plastic door is lifted and a set of rollers extends the tape around the drum. The drum then turns, reading the data on the tape and advancing it through the mechanism back onto the cassette. The data is then translated into scan lines and broadcast on your television as a moving image. A clear piece of material sits at the end of the tape, which a VCR detects by shining a light through it. It can then stop the tape and begin the rewinding process.


Recording


A VCR recording is created in a manner similar to playback. A tuner in the mechanism picks up the broadcast from a given station. It then turns the signal into data and transfers that to the tape as it passes over the recording head. Once the data is on the tape, it can be rewound and played back as normal. It often helps to erase the previous data on a VHS tape before recording on it (it provides a better picture). Flying erase head VCRs have a mechanism that facilitates this while a recording a tape.


Obsolescence


VCRs facilitated a revolution in the way people watch and enjoy entertainment. Newer technologies have eliminated many of the problems VHS cassettes faced. DVDs and Blu-ray discs are not as fragile as VHS tapes, and because they record digitally, their image quality is much higher. Even more importantly, the discs have no moving parts and nothing is required to contact their material in order to retrieve the data they contain. That means they won't wear out the way VHS tapes do, providing a much longer shelf life and pristine image quality to boot.

Convert A Cd To An Mp3 File

Whether a music professional or a casual enthusiast, there is little distinction when it comes to turning your favorite compact disc into an MP3 (digital music file). So, I'm here to hopefully demystify this once and for all. Hey, I still have issues with TiVo scheduling!


Instructions


1. Power up your computer. Insert a music CD into your disc drive.


2. Open iTunes. The default setting in the iTunes preferences should open automatically upon inserting the CD. If not, manually open the iTunes application. Note: I will be using an Apple computer for the following examples.


3. After inserting the CD, Click the "Import CD" button in the lower right-hand corner of the iTunes window.


4. You can monitor the progress of the import in the iTunes progress bar.


5. Once the import is complete, click on the "Music" tab located in the top left-hand corner of the iTunes window. If you scroll to the name of the artist on the CD, you will be able to locate the newly-imported songs.

How Do Pressure Regulators Work

Purpose


Valve trains are devices that are used to control the flow of air or liquid in and out of a closed system. Pressure regulators are a self-controlling form of valve train that control the flow of air in and out of internal combustion engines and air compressors. Their purpose is to match the pressure of the flow of air or liquid leaving the regulator according to the pressure of the flow of air or liquid leaving the regulator.


Form


The exact form of a pressure regulator can vary depending on patented brand, but they all share certain commonalities. An input pipe with a pressure gauge connects to a hollow sealed chamber. A hole in the opposite end of the chamber leads to a second chamber. In this second chamber is a spring-driven piston which normally keeps the hole closed. In the side of the second chamber is the output pipe, again with a pressure gauge for the user to inspect.


Function


Air coming in through the input pipe fills the first chamber. Only once it reaches a certain pressure does it manage to force through the hole and push back the piston. As the piston edges back, it slowly reveals the output pipe. In this way, a threshold of internal pressure must be surpassed before air can be allowed to leave the regulator. Unlock A Blackberry 7290

When you purchased your BlackBerry 7290, the smartphone most likely came locked to the service provider that sold the phone. You can use the 7290 on a different carrier's network but you will need to unlock it first. Once the phone has been unlocked, you will be able to use a SIM card from any GSM carrier. Unlocking the phone requires a passcode that is unique to each handset. No two phones have the same unlock code.


Instructions


1. Obtain your SIM unlock code. You can request the code from your mobile carrier or purchase a code from a cellular unlocking service. In the latter case, you will need the phone's IMEI number. Type "*#06#" to display the IMEI number. You can also find this number by opening "Options" and clicking on "Status."


2. Turn off the BlackBerry 7290. Remove the battery cover and battery.


3. Slide the metal clip to the left and flip it open. Slide the old SIM card out of the metal clip and insert a new SIM card from a different carrier. The metal contacts on the SIM card should face into the phone, with the clipped corner on the top right. Lock the new SIM in place by sliding the clip to the right.


4. Re-insert the battery cover and battery, then power on the phone.


5. Highlight "Options" and click the trackwheel, then select "Advanced Options." Click the trackwheel on "SIM Card" and type "mepd" (without quotes) on the keyboard. Nothing will appear on the screen as you type; this is normal. When you are finished typing, a menu will display.


6. Highlight "Network," type "mep" and then hold the "Alt" key as you press the "2" button. The phone will ask for a Network MEP code.


7. Type the unlock code on the keyboard and press the "Enter" button. The phone will display "Code Accepted." Verify that all of the menu options are set to "Disabled." If the "Service Provider" listing is still enabled, click the "Back" button and return to the SIM Card screen.


8. Type "mep" and then hold the "Alt" button as you press "4." The phone will ask for the unlock code again. Type the unlock code and press "Enter."

No longer do you need to carry a map around with you when exploring a town by car or hiking in an area that you are unfamiliar with. Instead, there are Global Positional Systems, known as GPS, that can help you find your location and the area you are attempting to travel to. These GPS devices can be mounted in cars, boats or can even be handheld devices. Before you rush out and get a GPS device, however, here are some of the disadvantages to consider.


Cost


Purchasing a GPS based on price can be a major disadvantage. If you purchase a "bargain GPS," you will get what you pay for, and features such as traffic and up-to-date maps could be lacking.


Reception


GPS devices are limited by having clear access to the satellites that provide the tracking. In locations with tall buildings or sparse coverage, reception can be poor.


Directions


Turn-by-turn directions are not available on every type of GPS device. Some will give very little advanced notice before an upcoming turn.


Accuracy


Maps on GPS devices are not updated in real time for all models. This means that it is possible a GPS device will direct you onto a road that is closed or no longer exists. It could also miss new roads and businesses.


Battery Life

Can A Photographer Take Outdoor Evening Photographs

Night photography can capture light and color with sculptural appeal.


When the sun sets, the challenge of outdoor evening photography begins. With the help of a few tools and a thorough knowledge of your camera's operating features, you can create dramatic images that make a dark background look appealing with available light and color. Although lower light levels will transmit through the camera lens barrel, a longer or slower shutter speed can help compensate to produce a correctly exposed image. Manual settings on a single lens reflex (SLR) camera will allow more control and experimentation for the right shutter speed and lens aperture.


Tripod


A tripod steadies a camera to prevent camera shake from causing a blurred night image. This three-legged support usually features telescoping legs to adjust the height of the camera's position. With a camera supported on a tripod, the photographer can select a slow shutter speed to capture the available light with a reduced risk of camera shake during the exposure. For example, a 20-second exposure can capture a fireworks display of trailing lights in the sky.


Cable Release or Remote Switch


A cable release and tripod provide valuable tools during night photography.


A cable release or remote switch attached to the camera allows the photographer to activate and open the shutter without pressing down on the shutter button and causing camera shake. This cable release inserted in a camera on a tripod can reduce the risk of blurred images during long exposures with limited ambient light. For example, at the scene of a floodlit building, a photographer presses the free end of the cable release or switch to open the shutter and create an image with the building's architectural details reflected in clear view.


Exposure Bracketing


Exposure bracketing refers to three or more images of the same scene showing the effects of a range of apertures or shutter speeds in difficult or low-level lighting conditions that affect the subject and surroundings. For example, this bracketing technique using three different shutter speeds to photograph an evening festival can reveal the festival goers as clear, static figures or slightly moving or blurry figures. Exposure bracketing allows the photographer to select the best image for the right portrayal.


Fill Flash


Attaching a compatible flash unit to the camera allows some electronic light to light up a nearby subject to contrast with the dark surroundings. A flash unit often provides a harsher, edgier look. An electronic flash, when used with a reflector or a diffuser, can offer a softer, balanced effect. Certain portable flash units work without a camera's hot-shoe mount and attach on a light stand for remote triggering to create images with more sculptural appeal.

Clean An Ink Jet Printer Head

Some printers have printer heads located in the ink cartridges, while others have printer heads that are separate. If you have a printer that has separate printer heads, there is a good chance somewhere down the road you could be dealing with dried ink in one of the printer heads. Hot water and some cotton swabs are enough to dislodge any dried ink that has accumulated in the print heads.


Instructions


1. Turn on your printer and open the access cover. Remove the ink cartridges and keep the cover open. Unplug the printer from its power outlet.


2. Dip a cotton swab in the hot water and begin cleaning the printer heads. Watch out for the rubber seals some printers have around the printer heads. If you rub too hard you could cause a seal to come loose. If your printer features removable printer heads, you can take the printer heads out and soak them in hot water for an hour or so, then use a cotton swab to clean out any leftover ink.


3. Install the ink cartridges only after the printer heads have completely dried. Plug the power cord back in and close the printer's access door. Run some test pages to make sure any dried ink that was loosened but not completely removed does not ruin anything you print later.

What Is The Agfa Scala Process

The Film


Agfa Scala is a black and white reversal film and development process. Instead of creating a black and white negative, Scala produces a positive black and white image. Scala is similar to black and white negative film. A sensitized silver halide layer on the film changes when it is exposed to light. Structurally, Scala is not much different than other black and white negative films. An emulsion is placed on a plastic film bases. Antihalation layers are added to minimize halo effects.


The Process


Scala processing is, in theory, similar to black and white transparency film processing for other brands. The difference is the use of proprietary Agfa chemistry that is no longer commercially available. Some labs, however, have developed chemistry similar to the original Agfa chemistry and offer Scala processing. The steps for processing Scala or another black and white film on which you would like a positive, rather than a negative, image is as follows:


1. Use developer to process the silver halides into a negative image


2. Use a stop bath to halt the developing process


3. Bleach the negative


4. Wash the negative


5. Use a clearing bath to remove clouding caused by the bleaching process


6. Expose the remaining silver halides to light


7. Re-develop the film


8. Use a stop bath to halt the developing process


9. Fix the image to prevent changes when the film is exposed to light


10. Wash and dry the film


Availability of Scala & Processing


Because Agfa is no longer in business, Scala is no longer being made. Currently available Scala is stock manufactured in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Because it is a silver halide based film, properly stored stocks should be good for many years to come.


Because of the dangers involved in the proprietary Scala processing chemistry, you are probably going to be better off having your Scala developed by a professional lab. There are a number of professional labs that offer film processing mailers for Scala.

Connect A Sony Ccdtrv138 Handycam To A Tv

The Sony Handycam CCD-TRV138 camcorder uses Hi8 videotapes to record your home movies. 2. Plug the small, round end of the supplied A/V connecting cable into the "A/V OUT" jack on the right side of the camera. The "A/V OUT" jack is found near the lens.


3. Connect the yellow connector of the A/V cable into a "Video IN" jack on your television and the black connector of the A/V cable into a "Audio IN" jack on your television to finish connecting the camera to your television.

Proper Use Of A Fume Hood

A fume hood is designed to limit exposure to toxic or flammable gaseous chemicals in a laboratory setting. It is vital that all lab personnel know properly utilize a fume hood to avoid chemical exposures. Keep the Sash Lowered

Limit Exposure


Only place your head inside the hood when performing maintenance on the device after all chemicals have cleared. Never needlessly expose yourself to the inside of the fume hood.


Placement


The best place is in the corner of a room, so that you only walk past the fume hood when you are using it. According to the University of Louisville,"A person walking past a chemical hood can create competing currents at the hood face, causing vapors to flow out."


Storage Capacity


A fume hood can only circulate so much air at one time. Only keep chemicals in the fume hood that you are currently using and avoid using it as a permanent storage space.

A fume hood needs inspection at least once a year to ensure that it is preventing outside chemical exposure.


Flammable Conditions

Waterproof My Slr Camera

There are a few DIY ways to waterproof your SLR camera.


To get the perfect shot of an underwater sea creature or capture a scene in a rainstorm, an underwater camera should be used. Not all cameras are made to be waterproof, though there are various ways to waterproof an SLR, disposable or any other type of camera. Some options will cost you a lot of money, but there are other ways to waterproof your SLR using a few simple household items in a do-it-yourself manner.


Instructions


1. Buy a waterproof case. Waterproof camera cases are available in various designs and qualities. Cases made specifically for your camera will be most effective, although a generic design that fits most cameras, such as Aquapac Waterproof Camera Case, is also very effective.


2. Make a case out of plastic wrap. Wrap the camera in plastic wrap. Two or more layers will be most effective. Cut a hole in the plastic wrap for the lens. Cover the lens with a small piece of glass to protect it.


3. Make a case using an unlubricated, very clear, latex condom. Place a cut-off end of an empty paper towel or toilet paper roll around the lens to create a protective barrier. Slip a condom around the camera and tie a knot at the end. Seal the knot using a glob of contact cement, such as Wetsuit glue. Repeat the process with a second condom. To minimize the formation of condensation, place a desiccant bag on top of the camera before covering it with the condom.

Repair An Xdpicture Card

The data on an xD photo card can be read by a computer.


Picture cards that are available for many types of digital cameras and cell phones can use an xD-Picture card to store photos and video. When your xD-Picture card is not functioning properly, when trying to use it with a computer, you can fix the problem by repairing the card. Problems that can occur with your xD-Picture card include information not being read by the operating system and data not being written to the card.


Instructions


Card Not Being Read


1. Turn on the computer and wait for the Windows operating system to load.


2. Insert the installation CD into the drive and wait for the Installshield Wizard to appear on the screen.


3. Click the "Install Driver for DPC-R1" option. Wait while the driver files are copied onto the system.


4. Click the "Finish" button when the Installshield wizard finished screen appears. Restart your computer if prompted.


5. Orient the xD-Picture card so that the metal connections are facing down or the logo on the card is facing upwards.


6. Insert the card into the slot of the memory card reader on your computer. Push slowly with your finger until the card is locked into place.


Data Not Written to Card


7. Examine the card and see if the plastic protection seal is still affixed to the card. Remove the plastic seal to write data to the card.


8. Click the "Start" button and then select the "Computer" or "My Computer" option. Right-click on the CD/DVD drive and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu. Go to the General tab and look at the available free space on the card. If data cannot be written, the xD-Picture card may be full.


9. Delete data or pictures from the card and then try to save the data again. Repeat this step if you are trying to save large files to the xD-Picture card.

Adjust The Speakers On A Panasonic Tv

Panasonic has been around for many years and their televisions have evolved to incorporate improved technology. Older Panasonics had very simple speakers controlled more or less completely by the volume button. New TVs have much more elaborate options, allowing you to tailor the speakers to fit your particular tastes. Specifics depend on the exact model of Panasonic, but a few general guidelines work for all of their TVs and can be used to properly adjust the speakers.


Instructions


1. Turn on your Panasonic TV and push the "Menu" button on the remote. A list of options will appear onscreen. Scroll down to "Audio" and click it. The option may have the picture of a musical note next to it to identify it more easily.


2. Select the "Bass," "Treble" or "Balance" options and move them up or down using the right and left arrows on your remote. The bass control affects the rumble on the lower end of the sound scale. The treble control affects the prevalence of sounds on the higher end of the scale. The balance control lets you emphasize either the right or left speaker to varying degrees, which you may want to do if your Panasonic TV is in an awkward or unbalanced part of the room.


3. Check the "Other Adjust" options below the bass, treble and balance controls. These settings allow you to shut off the speakers if you are using external speakers, to play sound in either analog or digital depending on the particular signal, to enhance the capacities of surround sound, and to level off sound from multiple sources. Not every Panasonic TV offers all of these options, but they can be adjusted with the left and right arrows on your remote until they are at the exact levels you prefer.


4. Find the "Normal" button at the top of the audio options. This acts like a giant reset button in case you've become tangled in the possibilities and want to start again from scratch. When you push it, it adjusts all the settings to a factory standard, which should work just fine in an average viewing environment. If the settings are different from that standard, the "Normal" setting should read "Off." As with the other controls, you can change it by using the left and left arrows on the remote.


5. Scroll up to the large return arrow at the top of the "Menu" window when you are done making changes. It will return you to the previous screen. If you're completely done, press the "Exit" button on the remote to eliminate the window.

There are many pieces of camera gear that can be constructed by the do-it-yourselfer. Many of these items are related to mounting the camera or providing lighting for the shot. Seldom do do-it-yourself projects involve the actual works of the digital or film camera. The DIY camera goodies are more often accessories than the actual camera itself.


DIY Lighting Gear


There are several lighting items that can be homemade. A homemade soft light box can be constructed out of a frame of PVC pipe covered with white cloth. Another even simpler light box can be made from a box serving as a frame. Cut large areas out of the flat surfaces of the box leaving the corners of the box intact to serve as a framework. Cover the box with white translucent cloth.


The website of the Digital Photography School also recommends using a disposable roasting pan as a flash reflector. A whole is cut in the pan and the head of the flash unit inserted. The bright metal of the pan will increase the effective range of the flash.


Light reflectors can also be homemade by covering cardboard with aluminum foil. The size and complexity of the reflector is only limited by the do-it-yourselfer's imagination.


DIY Camera Supports


Few people will try to build their own tripod. There are too many available models to choose from and prices are competitive.


However, camera stabilizers, usually used with video cameras, are a more common do-it-yourself project. Their products are designed with video production in mind but can be used for still photography as well.

There are many pieces of studio equipment that can be homemade. Stands used to support backdrops can be constructed of wood or pipe. Stands for studio lights can also be made from commonly available materials and a little ingenuity.


A green screen studio can also be constructed with homemade components.

Adjust My Car Amplifier

If you've hooked an amplifier up in your car, you may now be asking yourself: "How do I adjust my car amplifier?" It's a good question. If your amp isn't adjusted and set properly, the sound quality that results won't be nearly as good as it could be.


Instructions


1. Turn on your stereo and put in your test CD. The test CD should be a well-recorded disc of music of the type you like to listen to most often in your car.


2. Set your car stereo at a moderate listening level. Then, adjust the "Gain" control on your amp up (it will be a small knob with "Gain" printed by it) until the sound of the music you're listening to becomes slightly distorted. At this point, turn the "Gain" control down slightly until the music is undistorted.


3. Set the high-pass filter for your full-range speakers. If the amp is going to full-range speakers, like door speakers, turn on the high-pass filter for the channels powering those speakers. If the high-pass filter has a variable setting, put it at 100 Hz.


4. Set the low-pass filter for your subwoofer. If the amp is powering a subwoofer, turn on the low-pass filter for the channels powering those speakers. If the low-pass filter has a variable setting, put it at 100 Hz.


5. Adjust the bass boost. Many amps have a bass boost circuit. If you're powering a subwoofer, turn it on and listen to the music. If you're satisfied with the level of bass, leave it on. If it's too much for your taste, turn it off.

Make a Home Movie With Your Camcorder


The trick of making a good home movie is in the planning and editing. The shooting part is easy. The hard stuff comes before and after. Here is make a home movie with your camcorder.


Instructions


Plan Ahead


1. Break down the action that you are going to film scene by scene ahead of time. If you are going to be filming a spontaneous event, such as your son's birthday party, think about what you can expect to happen and write this down.


2. Scout your location: the living room where the clown will perform, the dining room where the cake will be cut or the backyard with the petting zoo. Going through the sites of your home movie may suggest camera angles and scenes to you. Big name producers and directors do this, and so can you.


3. Frame your shots as you walk through each setting. Think about where people will be and where you can catch the action. If possible, do rough sketches of what the shots will look like. When you get paid to do this sort of thing, it is called storyboarding.


4. Note the lighting conditions of your settings and any adjustments you'll need to make. If you need to set up lights, reflectors or other lighting equipment, do this before starting to shoot.


5. Make a list of the cast. Who is coming to your son's birthday party? Decide if you want to film short face-to-face shots with any of the guests.


Shoot and Edit the Movie


6. Review your scenes. Make a list of what you need, where you need to be and who will be on camera for each scene. Keep this information handy as you shoot your home movie.


7. Gather your equipment, making sure that you have extra batteries and power cords. Double-check your camcorder.


8. Shoot the movie. Use a tripod for still shots.


9. Let the movie sit, unseen by you, for at least a day. You need to come into the editing process with a fresh pair of eyes.


10. Cut the crap. The average attention span is measured in minutes. If you have the capability to edit, take advantage of it. Even the most basic camcorders have the ability to just plain cut scenes. Use this ability with bloodthirsty abandon.

Troubleshoot An Hp 3210xi To Print To Photo Paper

The HP Photosmart 3210XI has all the features of a standard all-in-one machine, such as copying and scanning, but its primary function is for printing photographs on glossy photo paper. Printing photos from your digital camera's memory card isn't handled in the exact same way as printing a normal document, and you may need to perform some slight troubleshooting to get it right. Printing photo paper requires changing a few options on the printer's control panel.


Instructions


1. Set your stack of photo paper sheets on the photo tray, which is positioned above the standard paper feed tray at the bottom of the printer. Set the paper with the glossy print side facing downward and the shorter edge facing toward you.


2. Insert your memory card, such as SD card or Memory Stick, into the corresponding memory card port at the front of the printer. Tap the "Photo" button on the printer's control panel.


3. Use the left and right arrows on the control panel to scroll through the photos contained on the inserted memory card. Highlight the photo you want to print.


4. Tap the "4" key on the control panel to zoom in if you want to crop out a portion of the highlighted image. Tap the "5" key to zoom back out and view the whole image. Tap the "OK" button on the control panel to save the zoom settings if you want to crop out a portion of the selected image.


5. Press "Start Color" to print the selected photo in color or tap "Start Black" to print the selected photo in black and white on the photo paper.

Use An Ansco Box Camera

The Ansco Box Camera, like the more famous Kodak Box Brownie, was marketed in the United States in the early part of the 20th century. It produces eight images on 120 film or other variations on 620 or 616 film. Only 120 film still is being manufactured. The large negative size allows for good-sized enlargements, although the limited shutter speed and lens quality may take away some of this advantage.


Instructions


1. Load the film in subdued light. Unclasp the camera back and take it off. Usually, the film roll goes in the bottom of the camera, threads past the back of the lens and goes onto the take-up reel on top. This may be reversed depending on the model. Close the camera back and use the red film window to watch the progression as you wind the film to frame one. Close the cover or tape up the red window to avoid light leaks.


2. Hold the camera vertically at about waist level and look down into the viewfinder. If you aren't able to see enough of your image, move the camera up to a better level for viewing. When you do this, the shutter release will be on your right. You also can turn the camera horizontally and use the other viewfinder for horizontal shots. The shutter release will be on top and you need to push it to the right to take the shot.


3. Use medium speed to fast film to get your shots. Films with ISO ratings between 100 and 400 will work best. Use slower film for bright daylight and faster films for lower-light situations. The 120 film is available in a variety of speed. The Ansco Box Camera only has one shutter speed, which is relatively slow and may have altered over the years since it was made.


4. Hold the camera steady for your photos. With a slow shutter speed, it is easy to get camera shake that will translate into blurry photos. If you can, rest it on something sturdy for your shots. Wind the film after each shot.


5. Develop the film yourself if you shoot black and white. Part of the fun of using vintage cameras is to shoot in black and white and develop it. You need to wind the film onto the reel in total darkness because modern film is too light sensitive for a safe light. Follow the development instructions on the film box. You still can scan your negatives and work with them in photo editing software to avoid the necessity of having your own darkroom.

Home Audio Receiver Work

General Information


The home audio receiver serves as the command center of your stereo system. The receiver is actually three separate components rolled into one package: the preamplifier, amplifier and tuner. While these components can be purchased separately for enhanced performance and adjustability, the home audio receiver provides the easiest, least expensive option.


Preamplifier


The preamplifier in the receiver is responsible for the majority of the receiver's functions. All of your audio inputs, such as CD players, DVD players, TVs and satellite radio are connected to the preamplifier using analog or digital cables. The preamplifier also handles basic functions like volume and balance. Different modes allow the preamplifier to process formats such as 2-channel audio, Dolby Digital and DTS. The most essential function of the preamplifier is to receive data from the audio source and process the signal. Signals are read and processed into the appropriate format such as stereo (two-channel audio) or surround sound formats like Dolby 5.1.


Amplifier


Once the audio signal has been processed by the preamplifier, the amplifier strengthens the power of the signal and then sends it to out to the speakers, where it becomes audible sound. Audio information is sent out to the appropriate speakers in the format that it was processed into. Stereo allows information to be sent to the left or right speaker, while surround sound utilizes an array of speakers, generally five to seven. The lowest bass frequencies are sent to the subwoofer.

The tuner allows for reception tuning of AM/FM and/or satellite radio stations.

Thanks to the availability of high-speed Internet and cheaper camera technology, just about anyone can broadcast live the way you see it done on television. With a good camcorder and microphone, your video and audio will look and sound professional too. It may take a few tries to perfect the broadcast, but once you have it down, your broadcast will look great.


Instructions


Camera setup


1. Go for professional cameras, even though they are large.


Place each of your camcorders on a tripod and install them on two different sides of the subject you are focusing on. Make sure neither camera shows up in the frame of the other camera's lens.


2. Use one camera for close-ups and one for full-body shots.


Turn on the cameras and zoom one in for close-ups of your subject. Use the other for full-body shots. For example, if you are shooting an interview, use one camera to provide a close-up on the person being interviewed and the other camera to focus on both the interviewer and interviewee.


3. Test your video and audio. Make sure your subjects are in focus. Check your audio levels and listen to sound through a pair of headphones.


Computer setup


4. Connect to the Internet via your computer. Go to a live streaming service such as Ustream.tv, Kyte.tv or any other of your choosing to broadcast your show. Create an account and familiarize yourself with the site.


5. Connect your cameras to the computer with IEEE 1394 cables. Allow the live streaming site of your choice to connect to your cameras.


6. Start broadcasting your show when you are ready. If you want to record your program on your cameras, make sure you have a tape or memory card inserted and hit record on your camcorders. Otherwise, the site you use to live stream can usually record your show onto the web to view later.

About Lithium Batteries


Lithium is an element that is found in a wide variety of batteries, falling into two broad categories: lithium and lithium ion. The public often confuses the two, assuming that the lithium battery that operates their remote control is similar to the lithium ion battery that powers their laptop. That is not the case. The two designs have clear distinctions in their electrochemistries and properties and, therefore, are used for different applications.


General Battery Design


Batteries are electrochemical devices, using the reactions between different substances to create an electric current. All batteries are made of three components: a cathode (positive), an anode (negative) and an electrolyte medium. However, it should be noted that these parts can take a wide variety of forms. The cathode might be a liquid or solid in two different batteries, for example. That will change the specific design of the battery but not its general function. The cathode and anode react through the bridge of the electrolyte medium to create a current but never come into actual contact because that would cause a short circuit. When a battery is attached to device, it becomes part of a larger circuit with its current flowing out into the device and then returning, albeit lacking part of its charge.


Lithium Batteries


Lithium batteries all use a lithium compound or lithium metal as an anode. The most common lithium battery on the market uses lithium and a cathode of manganese dioxide, along with an electrolyte of propylene carbonate and dimethoxyethane. Batteries using this electrochemistry make up roughly 80 percent of the disposable, consumer lithium battery market.


Applicatons


Lithium-manganese dioxide batteries are frequently found in a variety of consumer electronics that are meant to last, like clocks, remote car locks, watches, cameras, some remote controls and thermometers. Other lithium battery designs, such as lithium-iodide batteries, appear in other items that require a long life, such as pacemakers.


Pros and Cons


Consumer disposable lithium batteries are more expensive than their alkaline counterparts, but they have the singular advantage of producing a current between 1.5 and 3.7 volts. Voltage is akin to the water pressure in a pipe, which means that these batteries can deliver electricity more quickly. Their electrochemistry is also more robust, lasting much longer than alkalines.


Lithium Ion Batteries


Lithium ion batteries may use lithium not only in the anode but also the cathode. For example, a common design for electronics such as cell phones and laptops uses lithium cobalt oxide as the cathode and graphite for the anode. However, they derive their name from the current being carried through lithium ions. In terms of their chemistry, they are a different family of devices and have substantially different properties.

Instructions

3. Click "File" in the top left corner. Scroll down to "From scanner or camera" in Paint, which launches the scanner program to import your image.


4. Use your cursor to draw a box around the picture. Go to the "Edit" option and select "Crop." This will get rid of any extra open space.


5. Click on "File" and select "Save as." Save your file as a jpg.


6. Go to "File" again and select "Print." Click on your printer if it is not already high lighted and select the number of copies you would like. Load the printer with the high quality photo paper and then click the button "Print" on your computer.


Mac Phone Booth Program


7. Open the Phone Booth program on your Mac or iPad 2.


8. Position yourself or anyone else in front of the iSight camera.


9. Click the red camera icon below the preview screen to set the camera to take the picture. It will take 3 seconds for it to take the picture.


10. Select the "Effects" button under the preview screen to the right. Select an effect such as the Eiffel Tower to be applied to the picture.


11. Send the picture to a friend by "Mail" or "Flickr." The picture also automatically saves to your camera roll on your computer. Open the picture in Preview or other image viewer, then choose "Print" from the File menu to print to your designated computer.

Transfer My Blackberry Addresses To My Sim Card

The subscriber identity module (SIM) card identifies a phone to a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network. Most mobile phones companies use GSM networks, and therefore most mobiles phones use SIM cards. A SIM card can also be used to store a relatively small amount of data, including phone numbers from your address book. This can be useful if you are switching handsets because you just have to transfer the phone numbers to your SIM card and then place the SIM card in the new handset. In a BlackBerry phone, transferring phone numbers to a SIM card must be done one at a time and through the address book menu.


Instructions


1. Insert SIM card into your BlackBerry device by removing the back panel and the battery from its compartment. Slide the SIM card holder the unlock position and lift the latch up. Position your SIM card so that the gold contacts are face down and the notched end is facing right. Press the latch down and slide the SIM card holder to the lock position. Replace the battery and the back panel. Turn your BlackBerry phone if it doesn't automatically start up.


2. Press the menu button to go to the applications page. Click "Contacts" to open your BlackBerry address book.


3. Highlight the address entry that you want to transfer to your SIM card. Press the menu key. Click "Copy to SIM Phone Book" to finish the transfer. Repeat for each address book entry you want to transfer.

How Was The Hubble Telescope Built

Outer space


The Hubble telescope holds the distinction of being the only space telescope. It was launched in April 1990 and revolves around the Earth at the rate of five miles per second. It is named after the American astronomer Edwin Hubble, who demonstrated that other galaxies existed in the universe.


Why a Telescope in Space?


Hubble has been able to beam back to Earth images far more clear and detailed than any other telescope on Earth. This is because its position allows it to escape the distortion and blockage that ground-based telescopes experience due to our atmosphere absorbing most of the light. The idea of a space telescope first arose in 1923 when a German scientist proposed it. It took several years of hard work for the idea to take shape.


The Long Process of Building the Telescope


In 1977, the U.S. Congress approved funding for the telescope, and work was started by NASA in collaboration with the European Space Agency. Various universities and contractors were hired, and work was divided on the cameras, spectrographs, fine guidance sensors and the primary 2.4-meter mirror. The launch of the telescope was initially set for October 1986 at a projected cost of $475 million. After experiencing some delays, the telescope was finally ready for launch in 1990 and had cost more than $2 billion to make.


Maintenance of the Hubble


The Hubble space telescope was the first satellite designed to be maintained in space. Soon after its launch, a maintenance trip was made necessary due to the unexpectedly blurry images that were being sent back to Earth. This blurriness was being caused due to a flaw in the primary mirror, and a mission was carried out in 1993 to correct the flaw. After the first successful maintenance mission, three more service repairs have been done, the most recent one in May 2009.


Hubble's Photography


The first images from the Hubble telescope were released in January 1994. Hubble has beamed back more than 900,000 images, which have increased our understanding of the universe by leaps and bounds. The high resolution, pristine imagery has helped establish a more accurate age of the universe to be between 13 billion to 14 billion years. It has helped shed light on the expansion of the universe and the process of dying stars and how new planets are formed.


The Future


Hubble was initially designed to remain in service for 15 years but a recent servicing mission increased its life to May 2013. It will then be replaced by the James Webb Space Telescope, which will be placed at an even further distance from the Earth and is scheduled for launch in 2014.

Save Digital Tape To Video To Computer

When home movies are made using a camcorder that uses digital tapes you can transfer the contents of the tapes first to video and then to the computer to store or share. Digital tapes that are used with certain types of camcorders can be converted to video by using a DVD recorder to burn a DVD video. The DVD recorder can then be connected to a computer that has a TV tuner card to create a movie file.


Instructions


Create a DVD Video


1. Connect the camcorder with the digital tape to the DVD recorder. Insert one end of an RCA audio/video cable into the audio and video output on the camcorder.


2. Connect the other end of the RCA audio/video cable to the audio and video input on the DVD recorder.


3. Insert a blank DVD disc into the drive on the DVD recorder.


4. Press the "Record" button on the DVD recorder, then press the "Play" button on the camcorder. This will transfer the digital tapes to the DVD disc.


5. Press the "Stop" button on the DVD recorder when the video has ended on the camcorder.


6. Finalize the DVD disc in the DVD recorder to make it playable on other DVD drives. Refer to the instructions that came with the DVD recorder for the process of finalizing the DVD disc.


Create a Movie on the Computer


7. Unplug the RCA audio/video cable from the camcorder and connect it to the audio and video inputs on the TV tuner.


8. Double-click the icon on the desktop for the TV tuner.


9. Select the "Record" option in the software, then press the "Play" button on the DVD recorder.


10. Select the "Stop" option in the software to stop the recording process.


11. Save the movie file to a location on your system, such as the desktop or the Local Disk C.
